UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IENS CHRISTENSEN, NEIV YORK, N. Y.
WINDOW-CLEANING GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,592, dated August 8, 1899.
Application filed April 19, 1899. Serial No. 713,535. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ENS CHRISTENSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, (Brooklyn,) county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window- Oleaning Guards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to devices employed in washing the outside of the glass of windows, and has for its object the provision of a neat, simple, cheap, and efiective device for guarding the person against a possible fall.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists, essentially, in a curved or bowed metallic spring rod or bar having at each extremity a hook adapted and arranged to engage with the blind-stop or interior of the window-frame and also provided with movable and collapsible legs which extend downward from the body of the curved rod and act as brackets to raise and hold the same firmly in position, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed.
out in the claims. v
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of the window-frame and connecting parts, my guard being shown in position for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one extremity of the guard, showing the location and arrangement of the bracket, each end of the guard being of like construction.
Similar numerals of reference wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
1 is a curved or bowed body of spring metal having at each extremity an outwardly and downwardly curved hook 5. At 2 and 3 the body of the bow 1 is curved, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, for the purpose of providing holding-points for the brackets.
4 are brackets which when not in use are turned upward out of the way for the purpose of making the device lie upon a single plane for putting upon a shelf or other support.
. 6 is a blind-stop, 7 the-parting-strip, and 8 the interior window-casing.
9 is the exterior casing.
10 is the window-sill.
When constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, my improved window-guard will be found admirably adapted to the uses and purposes for which it is intended. In placing it in position it may be instantly sprung into the space back of the blind-stops and the brackets 4 placed in the position shown upon the sill of the window, or, if desired, the hooks 5 may be located upon the interior of the win dow-frame and the brackets placed upon the sill.
The person washing the exterior of the glass of the sash will find my guard a perfectly safe and ample'back-support which cannot get out of place and may be quickly and instantly changed from one window to another.
Having now fully described my invention,
whatI claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
. 1. A window-cleaning guard consisting of a curved or bowed spring-metal body formed of a single piece of metal provided at each extremity with hooks for engaging with the blind-stops of a window-frame, or the equivalent, and bearin g folding brackets, the whole combined and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character herein speci fied, the combination with the curved body formed of a single piece of metal terminating in horizontal hooks at each extremity, and having curves 2 and 3 therein, of the movable brackets, engaging with said curved parts of the body, substantially as shown and described.
Signed by me at New York, N. Y., this 7th day of April, 1899.
I JENS CHRISTENSEN.
