CLARENCE lV. ROBNETT, OF LEVISTON, lDAll-O.
KEY-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,922, dated August 1, 1899. Application filed March l, 1899. Serial No. 707,260. (No model.)
To all whom, zit 71mg concern,.-
Beit known that l, CLARENCE W. ROBNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewiston, in the county of Nez Perces and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful Key- Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
'lhisinven tion relates to key-fasteners; and the object thereof is to provide an improved and simple device of this character which may be readily applied to the inner side of a door and engaged with the key to prevent the lat- Ater from being turned and forced out of the lock from the outside ofthe door.
sists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shownin the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed ont in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the device applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the bracket, showing the manner of adjusting the device.
Corresponding parts are designated by like reference characters in all the ligures of the drawings. Y
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a portion of a door which is used to illustrate the application of the invention. Directly below and in line with the keyhole is mountedan inverted- L-shaped bracket 2. The long vertical arm is fastened to the door -by means of suitable screws 3, and the outer end of the horizontal arm is provided with an enlarged head 4L, which is provided with a vertical smooth opening 5. (Shown in Fig. 3.)
lA horizontal threaded opening 6 extends from stem l0 and the fastening-rod is held in place. It will be noted that the opposite lower side edges l2 of the head taper toward the stem, so that the head may fit any size bow and positively engage the opposite sides thereof to prevent the key frombeing turned while the rod is in place. In applying the fastening-rod the same is permitted to drop freely until itis stopped by engagement of the head 1l with the bow of the key. Thus the rod is set to its proper position without the need of careful adjustment. As the head ll fits snugly within the bow, the key cannot be turned, and the stem being firmly connected to the bracket cannot be forced out of engagement with the key -by an instrument inserted through the keyhole. To unlock the door from the inside thereof, it is simply necessary to loosen the set-screw 7 and draw the rod upward out of engagement with the key and the latter is free for use. The rod is then replaced in the bracket, and is therefore always in a convenient position for use.
' The parts of the present invention are few' in number, durable, and comparatively small, occupying but a small space upon the door, and not at all in the way.v It can beapplied to any door without altering or 'changing the same in any manner and without the employment of a locksmith or special tools, a screwdriver being the only tool required.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and
the minor details'of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from' the spirit or sacriiicin g any of the advantages of this invent-ion.
Having thus describedv the invention, what is claimed is- 1. A key fastener comprising three elements or parts, a rigid bracket or arm adapt,- ed to be secured to the door, an independent fastening-stem provided with a flat tapering inelastic head which is adapted to wedge in and lit the bow of the key, and means provided on the bracket or arm to see ure the stem rigidly thereto, substantially as described.
2. A key-fastener, comprising an approximately L-shapcd bracket, the horizontal arm thereof being provided with a smooth vertical opening and a horizontal threaded opening comm unieating with the vertical opening, :t set-screw fitted in the threaded opening, and n, separate fasteningtem having m1 enlarged head, the Stem being adjustzibly fitted in the I; smooth opening, and the head adapted to be snugly tted in the bow of the key, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as` my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
