SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,803, dated April 25, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN HARVEY Monnow, of Chicago, in the county of. Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Heel-Rubber, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to foot-gear; and its object is to provide a new and improved heelrubber arranged for convenient and secure attachment to the heel of a boot or shoe and more especially designed to prevent slipping on .frozen or moist sidewalks, on ice, &c., at the same time insuring ease and comfort while walking.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.

' Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improvement, and Fig. 3 is a per spective view of the same.

The heel-rubber is provided with a bottom A, made in the shape of the bottom for the heel of a shoe or boot, and from said bottom rises a flange B, extending along the sides and back of the bottom and fitting onto the sides and back of the heel C of the shoe or boot C.

On the inside of the flange B is' secured or formed a ridge D, adapted to engage a correspondingly-shaped groove formed on the sides .and back of the heel C, so as to securely hold the heel-rubber in place on the heel C. The forward end of the heel-rubber bottom A is provided with a front or closing flange E, provided at its ends with flange E, adapted to lap onto the sides of the flange B and to be fastened thereto by a suitable fastening device, consisting, preferably, of sockets F, secured on the ends of theflaps, adapted to engage buttons F secured to the sides of the flap B, said buttons also serving to fasten the flattened ends D of the ridge D to the inside of the flange B at the forward end thereof, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 2 and 3.

jointed to the front end of the bottom A so that this flange E can swing downward into a horizontal position, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, to permit of conveniently placing the rubber in position on the heel Cthat is, to engage the ridge D with the groove C in the heel. When this has been done, the front or closing flangeE is turned upward against the forward end of the heel, as is plainly shown in Fig. l, and thenthe end flaps E of thesaid flange E are swung rearward and fastened with the sockets F to the buttons F to close the heel-rubber and to prevent the same from 'slippin g in a longitudinal rearward direction.

When the device is applied on the heel, as described, then the wearer is not liable to slip on frozen or damp sidewalks, on ice, or the like, and as the attachment is made of rubber it is evident that case and comfort is insured in walking, the rubber bottom A acting as a cushion to prevent the usual jar incident to the ordinary leather heel coming in contact with the ground, sidewalk, or the like. The deviceis readily applicable to either heel, so that when worn on the outer edge it can be readily exchanged, so as to wear evenly,

thus adding considerable length to the life of the heel-rubber.

In order to detach the heel-rubber from the heel, it is only necessary to open the flaps E and move the rubber slightly rearward to disengage the ridge D from the groove C Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A heel-rubber, comprising a bottom, a side flange extending upwardly therefrom, a jointed front flange, and means for securing the front flange in position, substantially as described.

2. A heel-rubber comprising a bottom, a side flange extending therefrom along the sides and back of the bottom, a front or opening flange having flaps, and fastening devices for connecting the flaps to said flange, substantially as shown and described.

3. A heel-rubber comprising a bottom, a side flange extending therefrom along the sides and back of the bottom, a front or opening flange having flaps, fastening devices for connecting the flaps to said flange, and a ridge on the inside of said side flange, and adapted to engage a groove in the side and back of the heel, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination with a heel having a groove along the side and back, of a heel-rubber comprising a bottom, a side flange rising therefrom, and formed at its inside with a ridge adapted to engage the said groove on the heel, a closing flange on the forward end of the bottom, and provided with flaps, and fastening devices for securing the side flaps to said side flanges, substantially as shown and described.
