Be it known that I, RUDOLPH F. KLEEMAN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at the city of Racine, county of Racine, State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Satohels; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in the construction of satchels; and it consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of satchel of such construction that it may be readily rolled up in compact form similar to an ordinarymusic-roll when empty, so as to be more conveniently carried and to save space in packing for transportation, the construction being such that the device may be securely fastened in the form of a satchel or traveling-bag. In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure l is a plan view of my improved device laid out flat and showing the several attaching or fastening devices. Fig. 2 is an end view of a satchel made up and shows portions broken away to better illustrate the construction. Fig. 3 is an end view of the device as it would appear when rolled up.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates as a whole a sheet of leather, leatherette, paper, cloth, or other suitable material, which is cut into the form shown in Fig. l, so as to form a central or body portion A of rectangular form and two generally triangular end portions B B. The sheetA is preferably provided with a lining of any suitable or desired material. Greases or incipient folds are formed in the sheet A, as shown at a a, b b, and b b", the creases a ce as forming the dividing-lines between the rectangular body portion A and thev generally triangular portions B B. Transverse creases are also provided, so as to divide the rectangular body portion into three portions substantially ver tical to the oblique edges cf the triangular portions B B, and the creases b" b" converge toward the central outer points of the triangularportion B B and join the creases a a at the same points as the creases b l). These creases or incipient folds divide each of the triangular outer portions of the sheet A into smaller triangularportions B"and FF. The outer margin of the triangular outer portions of the sheet is slitted or cut, as indicated at c c, so as to leave loose iiaps C C, as shown more particularly in Fig. 1.

T he edges of the rectangular body portion are conveniently folded over, as at D D, and may, if desired, be reinforced by the insertion of metal in a familiar manner.

At suitable points upon the main or body part are arranged fastening devices G G, which may be of any desired construction, but are conveniently of the form commonly employed upon gloves, the projecting elastic heads .of said devices being arranged to rest upon the outside of the sheet of leather or other material of which the device is formed, and corresponding fastening members G" G are'secured to the aps C C, with the socket portions thereof upon the inner surfaces of said iiaps, as in Fig. 1. Upon each of the triangular portions F F is provided a fastening device H, similar to the devices G G, with its elastic head also projecting to theoutside of the sheet, and upon each of the portions F F is provided a fastening member h, with its socket upon the outer side of the sheet.

At convenient points adjacent to one edge of the body portion A" are provided fastening devices, with their elastic heads I I projecting from the inner surface of the sheet,

.and at opposite points upon the body portion are provided other fastening members I I", fWith their sockets upon the outer surface of ithe sheet.

Now in order to make a Satchel or shopping I or traveling bag of the device it is only necessary for the user to fold or bend the triangular outer portions B B along the creases a a, then to bring the fastening members II and h" together by folding said end portions along` the creases b b and overlapping the oblique edges of the same, and then to fold theouter partsy upward and to engage the fastening members G G" upon the flaps C O with the fastening members G G upon the main or body part. By thus folding and securing the several parts IOO of the sheet together a Satchel or bag is formed which is of substantiallytriangular shape in cross-section, the reinforced edges D D forming the sides of the top and the edges of the opening.

At Suitable points adjacent to the reinforced edges D D are secured suitable carrying-handles J J, by which the Satchel or bag may be readily carried when in use.

1f desired, a reinforcing-frame may be secured to the bottom part of the device, so as to enable comparatively heavy objects to be safely carried therein without the Satchel or bag saggingor bending, and this reinforcing or stiifening frame is conveniently made of two strips K K, suitably Secured to the inner Side of the body portion, as in Fig. 1, and two pivoted reinforcing-strips L L, each Secured at one end of one of the strips K and adapted to be placed at right angles to said Strips K K and secured at its free end to the other end of the other one of Said strips K. Vhen thus engaged together, the Strips K K L L form a rectangular stiffening or reinforcing frame of ghe same size as the bottom of the Satchel or as compact a form as possible, the fastenings are all loosened, the device then laid out fiat, as in- Fig. l, the triangular portion B B then folded inwardly along the creases a (L, and the device is then rolled up into the form shown in Fig. 3 and Secured by engaging the elastic heads of the fastening members L L' with the socket of the fastening members I" I". It will of course be understood that before rolling the device up the reinforcing fram e-pieces L L are loosened and moved into the position Shown in full lines in Fig. 1.

The device may also be used in the Same manner as a shawlstrap when desired by Simply folding in the triangular end portions B 13 and then lapping the device around the article or articles to be carried, in which condition the device may be readily carried by the handles J J.

It will of course be understood that any form of detachable fastening devices lnay be employed in place of the described two-part glove-fasteners, it being only necessary that some form of device should be employed which would enable the user to readily and quickly secure the Several parts of the Sheet together to form the Satchel or bag and to readily and quickly unfasten said devices when desired.

My improved device is very simple in its llfhen it is desired to roll up the device into construction, cheap and easy to manufacture, and affords an exceedingly convenient form of device capable of being very compactly rolled up when not in use and of being readily formed into a Satchel or bag at a moments notice whenever desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, iS

1. A Satchel or bag comprising a Sheet of iiexible material provided with suitable creases or incipient folds dividing said Sheet into main rectangular and two generally triangular portions, Said triangular portions bcing similarly provided with creases orincipient folds dividing the Sallie into Smaller triangular portions, whereby when folded into Satchel form the triangular portions form fiat vertical Satchel ends and the rectangular portion forms the Satchel bottom and sides, and detaching fastening devices adapted to Secure the several parts of the sheet in Satchel form.

2. A Satchel or bag comprising a sheet of flexible material having on two opposite sides thereof reinforcing-strips, reinforcing-strips arranged parallel with and intermediate Said first-mentioned reinforcing-strips, erossstrips pivotally connected to one of said intermediate Strips and adapted to be detachably connected to the other of said intermediate strips,-

end portions, and fastening devices for securing the Several portions in their folded or Satchel forni.

3. A Satchel comprising a Sheet of flexible material provided with creases or incipient folds dividing the sheet into a main rectangular portion and the triangular portions D, F and F, the main portion being reinforced along two of its edges and provided at its ccntral part with a reinforcing-fram e, the Several parts of the Sheet being provided with detachable fastening devices adapted to Secure the Several parts of the Sheet together in the form of a Satchel, and the main or body part being provided with other detachable fastening de-- vices forsecurin g the sheet in a rolled-up condition, the main or body part being further provided adjacent to its reinforced edges with suitable carrying-handles.
