CARRIER FOR BICYCLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 615,756, dated December 13, 1898.

Application filed February 8, 1893- Serial No. 669,564. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREMONT B. SHACKEL- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Neosho and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Bicycles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in combined baby and parcel or bundle carriers for bicycles; and the object is to improve the construction, increase the efficiency, and provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective device of this character.

To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention, as set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention in the several views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved baby-carrier. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device organized as a parcel or bundle carrier. Fig. 3 is a view of the footrest. Fig. 4 is a view of the back detached from the carrier, and Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of the diagonal brace 9.

1 denotes a reticulated basket closed on the sides, back, and bottom and open on the top and front, as shown. The top rail 2 extends entirely around the upper edge of the basket, and the bottom rail 3 extends across the front and the two sides and its rear ends are turned upwardly to form the eyes at 4 and the rear braces 5 5, which extend through the eyes 6 6, formed in the rear ends of the top rail, and through corresponding eyes in the rear upper cross-brace 7, and its projecting ends are turned backwardly and downwardly to en gage the handle bar. A duplex diagonal brace 8 is pivoted at its upper end to the front portion of the rail 3, and its lower separable section 9 is detachably secured to the front fork-crown, as shown.

10 denotes a clamp which adjustably connects the two sections.

The lower end of the brace-section 9 terminates in the eyes 9 and 9 which extend on each side of the post and above and below the fork-crown to receive the pinslO' 10 and thereby detachably secure said brace in place.

Diagonal cross-braces 11 11 extend under the bottom of the basket, and their rear ends are. connected to a cross-brace which is formed with lugs 11 11, which extend partly around the front post and prevent lateral movement of the basket.

12 denotes the hinged front piece, which is pivoted to the front of the lower rail 3 and when lowered, as shown in. Fig. 1, is supported bythe diagonal parallel braces 14 14, the upper ends of which are formed with hooked ends 15 15, which engage the eyes 16 16, formed on the top rail 2, while the lower ends of said braces are provided with lateral pins 17 17, which engage the eyes 18 18, formed in the rail19 of the front piece 12. These braces are also connected at their lower ends by a double foot-rest 20, the central portion of which is formed with an eye 21, which is de-, tachably secured to a stud 22 on the rail 19,

and it is also formed with the looped footguards 23 23 to form a rest for the toe portions of the. shoes.

2 L denotes the detachable back, which is provided with the depending braces 25 25, terminating in eyes 26 26, for conveniently securing it to the back of the basket, and with the angular side arms 27 27, the forward ends of which terminate in the loops 28 28, which are passed outwardly through the eyes 16 16 on the top rail 2, and a removable key or pin 29 passed through each loop to secure it in place.

When the basket is used as a parcel or bun dle carrier, the back 24 and. the foot-rests are detached and the front portion 12 is turned upwardly, so that the eyes 18 18 may be secured by the pins 29 29 (which are removed from the side arms 27 27) to the eyes 16 16 in the top rail.

While I have shown and described a reticu-= lated wire basket, I do not wish to be understood, of course, as confining myself to such basket, as it is evident that the bottom and sides of the basket may be made of sheet metal, leather, cloth, or other fabric, or, in fact, any suitable material to accomplish the same purpose' Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s

1. The combined baby-seat and parcel-carrier for bicycles, comprising the basket 1 provided with the continuous top rail 2 formed with the integral eyes 16 16, the front piece 12 hinged to said basket and formed With the eyes 18 1S and the removable pins 29 2O adapt ed to be inserted through said alined eyes in the front piece and basket-rail, to secure said front piece in position, substantiallyas shown and described.

2. The combined baby-seat and parcel-carrier for bicycles, comprising the basket provided with the continuous top rail 2 formed with the integral eyes 6 6, 16 1G and 16 16, and the bottom rail 3 formed with the integral eyes 4 4 and rear braces 5 5 extending through said eyes 6 G in the top rail and havin g its free ends turned backwardly and downwardly to engage the handle-bar, the front piece 12 provided with the rail 19 provided with the integral eyes 18 18, and the double foot-rest 20 provided with the parallel braces 14 14 having hooked ends 15 15 and the lateral pins 17 17 and adapted to support the front piece 12 when lowered, substantially as shown and described.
