Description
Y @und Wanganui @ffice n. S1 SHEPARDSON, or SHELBURNE FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 60,945, dated January 1, 1867.A
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE .TAGlii` TO ALL WHOM ITv MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HL S. SHEPARDSON, of Shelburne Falls, in the county ol' Franklin, and State of Massachusettsfh'ave invented a new and useinl Improvement in Carriage Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my jacli, the lift being down.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same, the lift being raised.
That others may understand my invention, I will particularly describe it.
A is the base,vinto-whicl1 is firmly set the standard'B, having its frontside or edge sloped 'backward from its junction with the base until it intersects the rear edge, forming an inclined plane, as shown. The lift C is. similarly formed, so that, when their inclined edges are placed in contact, and the lift is down, the two parts form a parallelogram, as shown in fig. 2. This is supposing the lift and standard to be made of wood, asis here represented. If constructed of metal these regular outlines would bedispensed with, both for the purposes ofY economy and ornamentation. Close to and parallel with the iorward or inclined edge of the standard B is the groove D. This groove is on`both sides of the standard. The plates or lugs E-are secured Ito the lit't C, and projecting along the side of the standard'B; their ends are curved downward into the groove D; and as a precisely similar arrangement' occurs on the opposite side of the standard and lift,.it is manifest that these Alugs E, in conjunction with the grooves D, will confine the two parts of the jack together, and will guide the lift in its ascents and descents.
The lift is raised by means of the lever F and the toggle G and AGv. When the lift is'down the parts are in position as shown in g. 1. The lever F then lies along the rear edge of the jack, its handles pointing upward, the side-pieces G" embracing the standard, and joined by pivot bearings H to the toggle G. When the lever F is turned down in the position shown in iig. 2, the part-G is forced up, carrying the lift with it, until the joint H passes a line uniting the upper and lower pivots of the toggle, at which time also the end of the lever Fis in contact with the rear edge of the standard-B, so that it cannot descend any further. These' positions of the toggle and the lever effectually lock the lift, and prevent it from descending,'however much4 force may be brought to bear upon it. In order to accommodate axles of different heights, the top of the lift is made with steps, as shown.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The standard B and lift C, in combination with lever F and toggle G G', constructed, substantially as described.
, H. S` SHEPARDSON.
