. TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it,known that I, WILLIAM A. GOOIDHER, of Burlington, New Jersey, have invented animproi Portable Ranges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon.
My in'vention'consists of the combination with the fire-place and ovens of a cooking range'of certa and pipes, the whole being constructed and arranged as fully describe h reni'tg that the undue l the outer casin g is prevented, while a continuous supply of heated air may be either thrown out into or directed to the chimney; the range being thus available for either winter or summer use.
In order to enableothers skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill now proceed to de manner of carrying the same into efi'ect.
On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification- Figure I is a sectional elevation of my improved cooking range.
Figure 2, a section onthc line 1 2, fig. 1; and
Figure 3, a plan view of the range with the top p'lateremoved.
A is the outer casing of the range, within which is a smaller casing, 13, and within the latter are i C C, and a fire-place, D, in which is the usual grate. To the front end of the outer casing are hung a a, of the twoovens, and the door 5 of the ash-pit, The sides and ends of the ash-pit and fire-place with slabs, c a d d, of fire brick, and at the back of the fire-place, above the slab cl, is the usual wate Both the casings, A. B, are covered by the top plate, F, in which are the usual openings, e 6. Between e' ovens C C and the casing B, is a space or 1111s,], which communicates through an opening, g, with an up G, and each of these pipes communicates at its upper end, with a horizontal drum, HQ. which is sccl upright casing, I, attached to the top platc'F. To the drum, H, are connected two vertical pipes former extending through the top of the drum to the chimney, and the latter communicating througl ing,2', with the ash-pit; and in each pipe, G J", is a valve, j, the stem of which projects through of the casing I. A short pipe, 70, extends from the drum H through the front of the casing I, and i: at its outer end with a cap. At the back of the casing, A, is a sliding door, Z, and inthe front of t near the lower edge of the same, are openings, :0 x. In the top and back of the casing I, are openir suitable form, and in'the pipe J is an opening,'g, to which is fitted a Hide, 6*, for a rpose described When a fire is kindled in the fire-place D, the products of combustion will pass over the tops of the round the same through the fluesf, through the openings g, pipes G G, drum H, and pipe J, to th When the fire is raked the valve in the pipe J is turned so as to allow the dust to pass from the ash-p the opening ito the pipe J and to the drum H, in which it accumulates, and from which it is rem'ovc the pipe is. The ordinary ranges are so constructed that the heat is either always thrown out into'th is wasted by being absorbed by the surrounding brick-work, the range in either case being availal during. part of. the year only; those ranges which throw out the heat being serviceable only in- WI! those in which the heat is absorbed by the' brick-work can be used only in summer. For this rec houses are provided with both winter and summer ranges. In the improved range above describ between the casings A and B, in the casing I, and in contact with the drum H, and pipes, absorb; given off from the inner casing and passes through the opening g to the chimney, so that during the s outer casing is prevented from being heated to an objectionable extent. During the winter, however .9, is lowered so as to close the opening q, when the heated airwithiii the casings will be discharged tl openings in the top and back of the casing I into the mom; Should the quantity of heated air s-n-ppl'i'e means he more than suflicient to warm the room in which the range is placed, a portion may be 001 other rooms through suitable pipes.
It will be seen that by the use of a range of this description the necessity of employing two difi'erent seasons of theyear is avoided. It will also be seenthat a range of this character is simple struction, may be made at a slight expense, and may be readily moved from place replace.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I The ovens C C, and fire-place D, in combination with the casings A and Iii, and pipes G G, and equivalents, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially :u and-ion urpose describe! In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing WILLIAM A. Goon Witnesses:
