Description

UNITED STA ES PATENT OFFICE.
It. OGDEN DOREMUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE ELASTIC SPONGE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TREATING SPONGE FOR STUFFING MATTRESSES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,714, dated November 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, R. OGDEN DOREMUS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Preparation of Sponge, to Render it Suitable for Stufling Beds, Cushions, 850., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
It is well known that sponge when in a moistened statethat is, when its tissues have absorbed liquids-is much more elastic than in the dry state; and it has been found by suit able tests that while in such moistened state it possesses elastic properties much better suited to the stuffing of beds, cushions, and such like articles than any substance heretofore applied to such purposes.
A patent has been granted to Henry A. Alden assignee of A. T. Moith, dated July 25, 1865, for the preparation of sponge for such purposes by moistening it with glycerine,hav-
stances lose moisture entirely at any temperature to which beds, cushions, and other articles which require to be stuffed with a light elastic substanceare exposed in use, and none of them will have an injurious effect upon sponge.
In carrying saidinvention into practice 1 prefer to use the chlorides of magnesium or calcium. The sponge should be torn into small pieces, and, after being properly cleansed by any of the well-known processes, put into a saturated solution of the chloride of magnesium or equivalent substance, and when soaked taken out and the liquid squeezedout by subjecting it to a pressure greater than that to which the article to be stuffed will be in use. It is then in a suitable condition for use as a substitute for, and superior to, horse-hair, feathers, or cotton for beds, cushions, dresses, and all other articles heretofore stuffed with elastic substances.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv The preparation of sponge by moistening it with a solution of the chloride of magnesium, or equivalent therefor, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
It. OGDEN DOREMUS.
