SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,806, dated November 16, 1897.
- Application filed March 3, 1897,
To all whom it may concern:-
Be it known that I, THoMAsKEENAN, a citizen of the United States,residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which 'it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to elevators, and the object thereof is to provide improved means for raising and lowering the elevator-cage; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the frame of an elevatorshaft, showing an elevatorcage mounted therein and my improved means for raising and lowering the same, the elevatorcage being in the lowered position; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the elevator-cage raised, and Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3 8 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference throughout the several views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 the corner posts or uprights of an elevator-shaft, and centrally of the elevator-shaft and at the 0pposite sides thereof are arranged posts 6.
At the bottom of the posts 6 is mounted a shaft 7, which projects at each side of the elevator-shaft and is provided at each end with a crank 8, and below the shaft 7 is a rod 9.

cross-bars 16, between which they pass and which are secured to the corner-posts 5, said connection being made by means of a rod or bolt 17, which passes through said cross-bars 16; and I also provide a plurality of crossbars 18, which consist of two separate side plates, as shown in Fig. 3, and which are held together or secured together in any desired manner and which are provided with longitudinal slots 19, through which pass the pivotpins 20, by which the ends of the separate sections of the lazy-tongs are connected. The ends of the separate parts or sides of the strips which constitute the bars 18 overlap the central posts 6 of the elevator-shaft, as clearly shown in. Fig. 3, and said central posts form guides for the lazy-tongs and hold the same in position, and any desired number of these cross-bars 18 may be employed, and in the operation of the device, as hereinafter described, said cross-bars are free to slide up and down on the posts 6. The upper section of the lazy-tongs is connected with the bottom of the elevator-cage, as shown at 21, this connection being a pivotal one, and, if desired, each of the sections of the lazy-tongs may be provided with one of the cross-bars 18. The operation will be readily understood from the-foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
When the shaft 7 is revolved in one direction, the elevator-cage, which is indicated at 22, will be lowered, and when said shaft is turned in the opposite direction the cage will be raised, and it will be apparent that said shaft may be turned by any desired means,the cranks 8 being shown simply for the purposes of illustration and description.
The rod 9 prevents the blocks or heads 11 and 12 from turning on the shaft 7, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described elevator comprising the combination with an elevator-shaft having uprights or posts 6, of a shaft 7 provided which are connected with said lazy-tongs, all
combined substantially as and for the purpose described. i
