BEDSTE AD-FASTEN-ING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,444, dated November 9, 1897.
Application filed June 15, 1897.
To (all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN F. TILLEY, of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have inventeda new and Improved Bedstead-Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact 'description.
This invention is adapted to three-part iron bedsteads; andthe object of the inventionis to provide means whereby the sections of the bedstead may be easily and securely connected without inconvenience arising from the unevenness of the parts or from the unequal expansion or contraction of the metals. With reference to this class of bedsteads it is frequently the case that the parts when they are to be assembled exhibit an untrueness which is so great as to prevent or make very inconvenient the assemblage of the parts. It is the purpose of my invention to overcome this disadvantage.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims define the actual scope of the conception.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formingapartof this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan View of a three-part bedstead,showing my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention detached. Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of the invention, showing it attached to the side and end rails of the body. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional plan with parts broken away, and Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the parts in different positions.
The fastening has a metal body portion composed of a side wall 10, a top Wall 11, and a front wall 12. The walls are arranged at right angles to each other, so as to form approximately an angle-iron with one end closed by the front wall 12. The rear edge of the top wall 11 has an upwardly-projecting rib 13, extending transversely across the wall. The front wall 12 has a horizontal slot 14: formed therein, said slot receiving a stud 15, rigidly attached to a block 1 6,1yin g flat against Serial No. 640,853. (No model.)
the front face of said wall 12, thereby reg11-- lating the position of the block 15 with reference to the body portion. Form ed integral with the block 16 is a tapering tongue 18. It will thus be seen that the block 16 may be moved transversely to occupy any appropriate position with reference to the body portion.
In practice four of the fastenings are used on each bed. Each angle-iron side rail 19' of the bed is run beneath the body portion of one of the fastenings, so that the two members of the angle iron side rail will respectively lie against the walls 10 and 11 of the body portion. The side rails 19 are rigidly connected with each other by end rails, such as the end rail 20. The end rails are respectively run transversely across between the ends of the side rails 19. The end rails are laid ontop of the walls 11 of the correspondirig body portion, so that the vertical members of the end rails will be respectively outward from the horizontal members and so that the inner edges of the horizontal members will lie respectively against the ribs 13. The parts being assembled in this position are held rigidly with each other by means of bolts 21, which pass through the parts 20, 11, and 19. Thus the four fastening devices and the parts 19 and 20 compose the frame of the three-part bed. This frame is connected to the head and foot posts, the latter of which, 22, are shown in Fig. 1, by running the tongues 18 through sockets 23, rigidly secured to the posts, as shown. Now when the parts are made and ready to be assembled should any unevenness or inaccuracy appear the parts may still be easily connected by adjusting the blocks 16 so that the tongues 18 will be in position to fit properly in their respective sockets. The blocks 16 may not only be adjusted horizontally, but they may be turned axially to attain still further adjustment. Either section of the fastening is adjustable on the other, which not only enables the fastening to be adjusted for non-uniformity of the post, but also to change the position of the side rail if such change be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a bed,the combination of a mattressframe having two end and two side rails forming a rectangular figure, and a fastening device for each corner of the mattress-frame, each fastening device having a body portion fitted between the contiguous ends of the end and side rails, and rigidly and permanently secured thereto bybolts respectively passing through the said body portions and through the said end and side rails, and each fastening device also having a block slidably connected with the corresponding fastening body portion, and the blocks being capable of connection with the posts of the bed.
2. In a bed, the combination of a mattressframe having two end and two side rails, each formed of an an gle-iron, and the end rails being laid upon the side rails to form a rectangular figure, a fastening body portion for each corner of the mattressframe, the fastening body portions each having a side wall, a top wall, and a front wall, the side and top walls lying over the corresponding side rails, and the front walls lying at the respective ends of the side rails, bolts passing through the top wall of each fastening body portion and through the adjacent side and end rails to rigidly and permanently secure the side and end rails and the fastening body portions together, and a block for each fastening body portion, each block having sliding connection with the front wall of the corresponding fastening body portion and each block being capable of connection with the posts of the 40 bed.
