.Beit known that I, JAMES'A.' DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Turbine lVater-YVheels and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention rela-tes to improvements in the construction of turbine water-wheels, for which Letters Patent of the United States No, 219,38 were granted to me on the 9th day of September, 1879; and the object is to simplify the construction and to increase the efficiency and durability of the same; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be vhereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-letters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view of my iinproved turbine with the wheel mounted in a horizontal plane. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the wheel mounted vertically. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the horizontal casing with the cover-plate and wheel raised a short distance above the casing. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the wheel. Fig. 5 is a crosssection throughrthe stuihng-box of the main Fig. G is a transverse vertical section through the center of the wheel, the casing, and the valve-box. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of the same.
B represents the approximately scroll-like shell or casing, and a2 the bottom plate, which is cast integral with the shell B. The removable tcp plate or cover a4 is provided with a scroll-like recess a', which receives the upper edge of the casing B, the whole being rigidly secured together by the bolts a3.
D represents the main shaft, which is cast integral with the Water-wheel C. The lower end of the shaft D is formed with a countersunk recess d to receive the bearing-stud f,
secured in the boss f of the bearing-lever F, which is fulcrumed in the depending bracket G, and its opposite end extends through a depending guide-bracket G', its immediate end engaging the stirrup h on the supporting-rod H, which extends upwardly through a lug on the cover d4, its threaded end receiving a nut it', by means cf which said supporting-lever F may be adjusted to compensate for the wear and rtear on the bearing at the bottom of the shaft D.
The water-wheel C is eccentrically mounted in the shell or casing B and immediately over the discharge-opening E and concentric therewith. The integral depending iian ged buckets C project into the opening E, the downwardly-inclined faces of which receive the full Weight of the water as it leaves the wheel proper.
E' represents a cylindric collar pendent from the bottom plate o? and forming a continuation of the discharge-opening.
y The integral radial buckets c c are formed with spiral outer edges and radial plane faces, which receive the first full impact of the Water, after which the radial tl-shaped openin gs between the buckets c c furnish a free discharge for the spent water and allow it to fall by gravity on the inclined faces of the depending fianged buckets C to impart additional force to the wheel.
Nrepresents the gate box or housing, which is formed at its inner side with a continuous flange O and is open at one end and formed with a surrounding flange 0.
o represents the outer side wall of the housing, which closes one half of that side, leaving the remaining half open, and around this opening is a flange o2, to which'the iiange N2 of the wood trunk box or socket N is bolted.
O represents an atta-ching and division plate provided at one end with an opening for passage of the water from the gate-housing into the wheel-casing and at the other end with a lateral flange p. This plate is attached to the iiange O by bolts t and to, lateral ianges a5 on the scroll-shell B by bolts t.
The side wall o' of the gate-housing is extended to form an inwardly-projecting flange o3, which forms a chamber o4 at one side of the water-passage for the gate Q.. This gate IOO is provided With rack-teeth which mesh with a pinion R on a shaft R. The open outer end ot' the housing which leads4 into the gatechamber is closed by a plate q, attached by bolts q' tothe flanges o2 p. By detachin g this plate access may be readily had tothe housing to repair, remove, or replace the gate Without taking the entire casing apart.
As will be `seen by reference to Fig. 6, the gate-box contiguous to the parallel face of the casing o is formed with rabbeted guiderecesses P, which receive the vertical anged edges of the gate and serve to hold it in place when operatedby the pinion on the shaft R'.
In the modification shown in Fig. 2'the` construction is practically the same, except that the shell and Wheel are mounted vertically and an elbow shown in the right of the figure is provided to conduct the spent Water oft from the Wheel.
Having thus fully described iny invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
