No. 588,078. Patented Aug. 10,1897.

ENVELO P.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,078, dated August 10, 1897. Application filed November 25, 1896. Serial No. 613,373- (NO model.)
I0 all wwnt t 'may concer/L:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MITCHELL MOYLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscogee, in the county of Escamba and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in envelops and it consists of certain novel constructions which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a top plan view of a blank embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the said blank partially folded and showing the doubling in the end securing-flaps. Fig. 3 represents a top plan view of a modified form of a blank embodying my invention, and Fig. 4 represents a bottom plan view of said modified form in its folding position.
A A in the drawings represent the folded portions, upon which the message or letter is to be written, B B the end closing-naps, and C the top mucilage-iiap. The portions A A are preferably two in number and are folded along the line a, so as to reduce the sheet to the proper size for'mailing. The closing-flap C is provided with mucilage about its edge and is flexibly connected to the top edge of the upper portions A A. The end flaps B B are :tiexibly connected to the opposite ends of the portions A A and are each folded as follows: along the line b, corresponding in position with the fold d, this fold being outward, then along the lines b' h', running diagonally from the intersecting point of the lines b and d to the outer ends of said flaps. Theselatter folds b' extend inward, so that when the p0rtions A A are folded along the line ct ct the said folds b' b' will extend inward, while the folds b b will extend ou tward. This is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. After the said end aps have been folded into the position shown in Fig. 2 the securing-flap C is moistened and pressed down over the upper edge of the outer portion A, thus securing the envelop against any inspection of its contents.
When the envelop arrives at its destination, the fold joining the iiap C and portionA is severed, thus permitting the envelop to be opened and its contents examined.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4 I have inserted two auxiliary writing portions A'A' between the top of one portion A and the sealing-nap C, a suitable fold a' being made between the two portions A' A'. The portion A', adjoining the portion A, is provided with a triangular sealing-flap d2 at each end. Each of these aps is provided along its edge with a coating of muoilage. The upper flap A', to which the securing-flap C is attached, is provided with two lateral slits a3, into which the ends of the triangular naps c2 are inserted when the envelop is sealed. In this form of my invention the two lower portions A A and the end flaps B B are foldedand creased in substantially the same manner as before described. The said portions A'A' are then folded about said portions A and the ap C secured down in position by being moistened and the mucilage being applied upon the back of said flap C and the iiap doubled under and not over the lower portion A'. The end flaps are then moistened and pressed down over the upper portion A',
the ends of said iiaps being first inserted' through the slits a3. A suitable seal may now be placed over the end of said fiaps d2 where they enter the slits CL3 to prevent withdrawal of said flaps from said slits.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that this form of my invention is doubly sealed against any examination of its contents and also about a double amount of writing-space is provided. Of course any number of the portions A A might be provided, according to the length of the communication to be written upon the same.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the use of writing-paper is altogether avoided by the use of my invention, the communication being written directly upon the interior of the envelop itself.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an envelop, the combination with a plurality of folded portions adapted to be written upon and one of which is provided against inspection, and ,each comprising a Central outward fold, and intermediate diagonal inward folds, and a securing-flap for connecting the Writing portions when folded together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof 1 have signed this specification in the presence of two subsorib ing Witnesses.
ALEXANDER MITCHELL MOYILAN.
