Description

W. J. SLO FINGER NAIL TR ER.
Patented July 27, 1897.
/N VE N TOI? A TTOHNE YS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. SLOAN, OF EAST LIVERPOOL, OHIO.
FINGER-NAIL TRlMlVlE-R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,243, dated July 27, 1897.
Application filed March 5, 1897. Serial No. 626,692. (No model.)
' as is plainly illustrated in the drawings, so
To all whom t may coz/wem.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SLOAN, of East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Finger -Nail Trimmers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved finger-nail trimmer, preferably combined with'a lead-pencil to form a rubber-tip holder and a binding for the pencil, and to permit of using the pencil as a handle for manipulating the trimmer to Iile the finger-nails.
The invention consists principally of a tube formed with a series of longitudinal depressions, forming longitudinal guiding-ridges between adjacent depressions, and transverse teeth formed in the surfaces of the said depressions and terminating at thesaid ridges.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.`
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional plan view of the same on the line-3 3 of Fig. l.
The improved finger-nail trimmer is pro,- vided with a tube A, preferably made of sheet metal and secured at one end to alead-pencil B and arranged to receive at its other end a rubber tip C for erasing purposes.
On the tube A and between the ends thereof are arranged longitudinally-extending depressions A', forming longitudinally-extending ridges A2 between adjacent depressions, the said ridges forming guides for the flesh of the finger to rest against when using the device.
The surface of each depression A is formed that the said teeth readily engage the edge of the linger-nail when placing the adjacent ridges under the nail against the flesh of the finger, to permit of drawing the trimmer forward and backward by the operator, using the pencil B as a handle, so as to file the finger-nail.
By the arrangement described the tube A is made star-shaped in cross-section at the depressions, as is plainly indicated in the drawings, so as to greatly heighten the appearance of the tube and consequently of the entire device-that is, the combination pencil-holder, linger-nail trimmer, and eraser in the form of a rubber tip.
As the tube A is attached tothe upper end of the lead-pencil B it forms a binding for the same, and also serves to support the rubber tip for erasing-purposes, as before mentioned.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A n`nger-nail trimmer consisting in a metallic tube havin-g an elongated depression run longitudinally along the tube, the ends of the tube being unbroken by the depression and the face of the depression being provided with teeth run transverse to the depression and serving to engage the finger-nails.
2. A writing instrument and nger-nail trimmer, the writing instrument having a body, one end of which is provided with a plurality of lon gitudinally-eXtendin g grooves, a metallic tube with a series of longitudinally-extendin g portions, the ends ofthe tube being unbroken by the depression and the tube embracing the said end of the writing instrument so that the depressed portions of the tube will respectively fit in the grooves of the pencil, and an eraser lheld within the outer end of the tube, the outer faces of the depressions having teeth formed thereon to engage the finger-nails. n
