INVALID-CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,432, dated July 13, 1897.

Application filed January 9, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, SARAH GOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arcanum, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Invalid-Chairs and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has relation to invalid-chairs, and the object is to provide a convenient article of this class for the sick-room; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim. 1

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved chair. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the back-rest section being partially inclined and with the leg-rest section swung outward and the foot-rest section lying under the le -rest section. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the back-rest section, the leg-rest section, and the foot-rest section extended to their greatest points of adjustment; and Fig. 4 is a similar view lookingtoward the back of the chair.

In the drawings, 1 denotes the legs of the chair, which are provided with casters 2 and which are connected by upper and lower cross-bars 3 and at, respectively. The upper ends of the legs extend above the upper crossbars for a purpose presently to appear.

5 denotes the back-rest section, the lower ends of the side pieces of which are hinged to the upper ends of the rear set of legs. The upper portion of the back-rest section is extended to form a head-rest section 7, and both of these sections are caned, as shown.

8 denotes the arms, the inner ends of which are secured to the side pieces of the back-rest section and the outer ends of which are connected to the arm-posts 9, the lower ends of which are supported upon the upper ends of the front set of legs when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1.

Then it is desired to adjust the back of the chair to the angle or inclination best suited and most comfortable for the patient, the outer ends of the spring-rod 11 are pulled backward from engagement with the rackbars and the back tilted to the desired position, where it is held by releasing the ends of the spring-rod and allowing them to spring into the notches of the rack-bar.

15 denotes the leg rest section, which is hinged to the forward upper cross-bar 3, and to the outer end of this section is hinged a foot-rest section 16. The foot and leg rest sections are held in the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3 by rack-bars 16, which have.

20 denotes the chamber compartment, which consists of side boards, the front end board 21, the hinged board or door 22, the bottom board, and the seat-board 24, having an opening 25, from which extends downward the funnel 26, which extends into the chamber 28. WVhen it is desired to use the chair as a commode, the seat 18 is removed and the patient sits upon the seat-board 24. The compartment is stench-tight, thus preventing the escape and exhalations of fetid odors.

Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of myinvention, Ido not desire to be confined to the same as such changes or modifications may be made, as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
