HENRY C. STALLINGS, OF IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO.
BRICK- MASONS HAMMER.
SPECIFIGATIQN forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 584,528, dated June 15, 1897.
Application filed N vember 10, 1896. Serial No. 611,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. STALLINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Idaho Falls, in the county of Bingham and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick-Masons Hammers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to improvements in brick-masons hammers, and the object is to provide a tool of this class with a set or series of interchangeable bits or points to meet various requirements; and to this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings the same figures of reference indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a side elevation of a brick-hammer, partly in section, embodying my improvement, with the removable ham mer-point in place. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the nut on the jaw reversed for use as a claw. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the hammer. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a claw-hammer point detached from the hammer. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the adz-point. Fig. 6 represents the toothed point, and Fig. 7 the pickpoint.
1 represents the handle, and 2 the hammer head or socket. This head 2 is formed with a transverse dovetail slot 3 between the jaws 4 and 5, the said slot being widest at the bottom. I
6 is a thumb-screw having a flanged shoulder 7 and a threaded shank 8, which passes through an orifice 9 in the jaw 4 and engages an internally-threaded sleeve 10 of a nut 12, formed with a circular head 13, the inner face of the beveled flange 14 having a bearing in the circular countersunk recess 15 in the jaw 5, so that when the nut is in the position shown its outer inclined face 16 forms a continuous line with the outer face of the hammer. When the thumb-scsew is tightened,
the nut is drawn down into the jaw 5 to give ita broad bearing and rigidly clamp the bit or point between the jaws 4 and 5. The
outer face of the beveled flange 14 of the nut is formed with a V-shaped radial slot 17,
forming a claw which, when the nut is turned, as shown in Fig. 2, projects beyond the face of the hammer and forms a convenient implement for withdrawing nails, tacks, &c. ,and
when not in use for this purpose can be restored to its normal position.
The interchangeable tool-points are each provided "with a dovetail shank 18, which slides laterally into the slot 3, the sleeve 10 passing through the orifice 20 in the shank to firmly secure the same in place.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arangement of the several elements of myinvention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hammer provided with a jaw 4 having the orifice 9, and the jaw 5 having the circular countersunk recess 15, the inner faces of said jaws being arranged at an angle to form a dovetail recess, in combination with the interchangeable point having the dovetail shank 18 provided with the orifice 20, and the thumb-screw 6 having the circular nut 12 provided with the threaded sleeve 10 and the beveled flange 14, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A hammer provided with a series of interchangeable tool-points substantially as described, in combination with the thumb-screw 6, and the circular nut 12 having the integral threaded sleeve 10 and beveled flange 14 provided with the V-shaped radial slot 17, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY O. STALLINGS.
IVitnesses:
GEORGE OHAPIN,
G. R. Hrrr.
