LIQUID-RELEASING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,602, dated April 13, 1897.

T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JERRY \V. JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Earlville, in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Releasing Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to toilet articles, though more particularly to an article which is especially adapted and intended for the use of barbers, forming, as it does, a necessary adjunct to their appliances; and it consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts,- which will be hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, made a part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention applied to use and attached to the rear of a barbers chair. Fig. 2 is a vertical dia-metrical section of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the valve-rod and accompanying closures.
In referring to the several details involved in the formation of my dampening device reference will be had thereto by figures, the the same figure designating a similar part in all the views.
The object of my invention, it may be stated, is to provide a ready and efficient means for providing moisture for the hand of the barber or for a cloth or sponge used by him in his work. I
It will be seen that the device is one of great convenience for the purpose named, obviating, as it does, the necessity of the operator going to a distant part of the room to dampen the hand or cloth in one of the processes of shaving.
The device may be ornamcntally constructed or may be formed as cheaply as desired, and will form one of the useful and pleasing features of the shop.
In carrying out my invention I provide the body 1 preferably formed as shown, so as to have in section the appearance of an inverted cone, the tapered lower end forming a seat for the operating-valve employed to release a large or small amount of liquid, as preferred. It will be understood, however, that any preferred form may be employed for the body by providing therefor a tapered exit or neck in which to seat a valve of suitable construction.
In the form of body which I have illustrated for the purpose of this application I so construct the same that it will be provided with the elongation or neck 2, while in the upper part of the body I arrange the diamet-rical aperture 3, which is preferably formed with the inclined downwardly-extending edges 4, adapted to receive the tapered stopper or closure 5, and said opening providesmeans for introducing into the body the quantity of water or other liquid desired. Seated in the lower end of the closure 5 is the valve-rod 6, which extends downward through and below the neck 2, forming the handle or button 7 for itsmanual control. The extreme lower end of the neck 2 is providedwith the perforated lid 8, which is connected to the neck by solder or other preferred means. A diametrical bore is provided in the lid 8 of suflicient size to snugly receive the rod 6 and admit the same being reciprocated therein. Near the upper end of the neck 2 I provide the valveseat 9, which may be formed of rubber or other preferred 1naterial,and arranged to bear upon said seat is the plunger 10, formed suband tapered lower end. The seat 9 is arranged to rest upon the radial flange 2, formed in the upper end of the neck 2,while the spring 11 bears against the lower side of said flange and extends downward toward the lid 8, where its end is keyed or otherwise secured to the rod 6.
By this arrangement of the parts it will be seen that when an upward pressure is brought to bear against the button 7 it will cause the rod, with its accompanying plunger 10 and closure 5, to rise, thus providing for the exit of the water or other contents of the body through the perforations 8 When a sufficient quantity of the liquid has thus been released, the upward pressure upon the button 7 is removed, when by action of the spring 11 the rod 6 will be forced downward, carrystantially as shown with the enlarged upper ing with it the plunger 10 and the closure 5, effectively cutting off a further flow of the liquid. By this arrangement it will be seen that any quantity measured by the capacity of the body may be readily released directly into the hand of the operator or to be absorbed. by a cloth or sponge held under the same, as preferred.
It will be understood that other forms of construction than that herein shown may be elfectively employed to do the work, and I do not wish, therefore, to be confined to the ex act form of construction set forth. It will also be understood that in lieu of the construction shown for the rod 6 a varied form thereof may be employed wherein said rod may terminate at its point of connection with the plunger 10, in which case the closure 5 may be secured by screw-threads or other preferred device or may be wholly replaced by a threaded cap.
By providing a yielding cushion for the seat 9 the closure maybe effected by the slightest pressure of the plunger 10, which will be readily apparent.
The device I have illustrated and described it will be conceded, is equally applicable for holding and releasing bay-rum or other toilet accessories.
If desired, the ears 12 and the bail 13 may be provided for adjusting or suspending the device at any preferred point, or it may be arranged to rest in a hole of less diameter than the body provided in a shelf or table and through which the lowerend will project sufficiently to render the handle or button accessible.
Believing that the advantages, construction, and use of my invention are made fully apparent from the foregoing specification,
upon its lower end and having an orifice inits upper end; valves suitably mounted in said openings; an operating-rod connecting said valves; a perforated cap for the lower opening and means for holding said valves normally in a closed position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described dampening or liquid-releasing device consisting of the body, provided at its upper end with an opening having inwardly-inclined walls and at its lower tapered end with acylindrical exit-orifice or neck; valves mounted in the upper and lower openings thus provided; an operating-rod connecting said valves and extending downwardly entirely through the neck and terminating in an operating-button; a spring so disposed in said cylindrical exitorifice and connected to said rod that said valves will be held normally closed; a perforated plate secured to the lower end of said orifice, and a handle or bail attached tothe upper end of said body, all operatively combined in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
