Description

J. P. WARNER.
GUN SWAB.
'(No Model.)
No. 566,041. Patented Aug. 18, la.
QHiige sses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IABEZ FERDINAND WARNER, OF PROPHETSTOWN, ILLINOIS.
GUN-SWAB.
SPECIFICATION forming part f Letters Patent N0. 566,041, dated August 18, 1896.
Application led April 17, 1896. Serial No. 588,039. v(No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known thatI, J ABEZ FERDINAND WAR- NER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prophetstown, in the county of Vhiteside and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Gun- Swab, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gun-swabs; and it has for its object to provide in a device of this character simple and efficient means for expanding the same, whereby the swab may be caused to either bind tightly upon the interior of the gun-barrel or the passage of such swab be free, as desired, and, further, to so construct the body of the swab as to render the same more susceptible to the action of the expanding means.
To this end the invention consists, substantially, in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully illustrated, described, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a gun-swab constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the figures.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a head formed of any suitable material and provided at one of its sides with an internallythreaded neck 2, the opposite side having a threaded stem 3, provided with a shoulder 4.
Mounted on the neck 2 of the head 1 is a sleeve 5, which sleeve is preferably formed of vulcanized soft rubber, and is provided with annular corrugations 6, which form peripheral biting-teeth 7. This sleeve 5 is provided with a bore 8, into one end of which theneck 2 is inserted, and disposed within the other end of said bore is an adj usting-nut 9, which nut comprises a disk-like head 10 and a threaded stem ll. It will be noted that the neck 2 is of less length than the sleeve 5, and the threaded stem 11 passes through the lbore S and into the threaded portion of said neck 2, thereby securely holding the sleeve 5 upon the neck.
The herein-described swab is adapted for application to any ordinary wiping-rod, and is screwed into the tip thereof, the stem 3 entering said tip and the shoulder 4L abutting against the end of the same. The sleeve 5 is preferably of a diameter slightly less than the bore of a gun-barrel, and for cleaning the latter an ordinary strip of absorbent material, such as is commonly employed, may be placed upon the swab and passed through said barrel in the usual manner. If it is desired for the sleeve 5 to bind tightly against the interior thereof, the adj listing-nut 9 is screwed farther into the neck 2, and by this operation said sleeve is expanded, the bitingteeth 7 being forced closer together and into contact with the interior of the barrel.
The function of the biting-teeth '7 is very important in the herein-described swab, from the fact that said teeth present an irregular surface to the absorbent material used in cleaning, and hence such absorbent material clings to the sleeve 5 and is prevented being displaced therefrom during the continued cleaning operation. It will also be seen that by reason of the corrugations 6 the sleeve 5 may be more easily expanded than if the latter were of a smooth surface, thus permitting the swab to be effective in its use within barrels of different diameters of bores.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my improved swab may be caused to either bind tightly against the interior of the barrel or, if desired, the action of the same may be free, and, while I have described the sleeve 5 as being composed of vulcanized soft rubber, cork, felt, or other elastic materials may bev substituted therefor. Y
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A gun-swab, comprising a head having at one of its sides an internally-threaded neck, and at its other side provided with means for attachment to a suitable handle, an expansible sleeve mounted upon said internallythreaded neck, said sleeve being provided with exterior annular corrugations forming peripheral biting-teeth, and an adj usting-nut for holding said sleeve upon the internallythreaded neck, said nut having a threaded In testimony that I claim the foregoing asstem passing through the sleeve and into enmy own I have hereto afXed my signature in gagement With the internally-threaded neck, the presence of two Witnesses.
and a disk-like head contacting with one end JABEZ FERDINAND WARNER. 5 of the sleeve, whereby said sleeve may be Vtnesses:
