CABINET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,010, dated August 18, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FERDINAND N ORKUS, (having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States,) residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in cabinets designed more particularly for use by physicians and surgeons.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation, the doors to one of the lower compartments being open and the bottle-rack being drawn out from one side of the cabinet. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the cabinet having been turned through an angle of one hundred and eighty degrees, the doors to one of the lower compartments being shown open and the doors to one of the upper com partments being shown partly open. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar section on line 5 5 of Fig. 3.. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of one portion of my device.

In the drawings, 7 indicates a cylindrical casing divided into two sections by the horizontal partition 8. The upper section is divided into three compartments 9, 10, and 11 by the vertical partitions 12 12, said partitions being located one on each side of the casing and extending entirely across said casing. 13, 14, and 15 by means of the partitions 16 16, located immediately under partitions 12 12.

Compartments 9 and 11 are each inclosed by a pair of glazed doors 17, which are hinged to the outer surface of the casing and arranged so as to swing in a horizontal plane.

Upon the outer face of each partition 12 I secure a mirror 18, and compartment 9 is provided With a series of shelves 19, preferably glass, on which may be laid the various instruments used by physicians and surgeons.

Compartment 11 is provided with a series of shelves 20. Shelves 20 are secured together so as to form a single structure, which may be bodily removed from the compartment and a series of glass shelves. similar to shelves 19 substituted therefor in case a large number of instruments are to be placed in the cabinet.

Compartment 10 is adapted to receive a sliding bottle-rack 21, which is divided by the longitudinal and transverse partitions 22 and 23 into a series of four compartments 24, 25, 26, and 27, which are again divided by the horizontal shelves 28 into a series of receptacles adapted to receive medicine-bottles of various sizes. For the purpose of preventing said bottles from being easily displaced a small guard-wire 29 is stretched across the mouth of each receptacle, a short distance 6 above the floor thereof.

Each end of compartment 10 is closed by a door 30, hinged to the outer wall of the casing. The construction is such that the bottle-rack may be drawn out from either end of com- 7 partment 10 about half of its length.

Compartment 13 of the lower section of the casing is provided with a shelf 31, on which may be placed a washbowl, towels, soap, &c., and mounted under said shelf in ways 32 is a 7 sliding shelf 33, which may be drawn out into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig.

3 to provide a support for the washbowl when in use.

Compartment 15 is subdivided by the par- 8 tition 34 and shelves 35 into a series of compartments adapted to receivelarge bottles, cases of supplies, 85c.

Compartment 14 is provided with two sesies of drawers 36 and 37, each extending but 8 part way across the compartment, and the drawers of the two series being adapted to be drawn out from opposite ends of the said compartment.

For the purpose of supporting the casing 9 so that it may rotate in a horizontal plane I provide a base 38, mounted on suitable casters 39 and having projecting from its upper side a central post 40. The upper end of post 40 is provided with a socket 41, which is adapted to receive the semispherical pivot 42, provided with a central cylindrical pin 43. Pivot 42 is secured to a cross-bar 44, mounted on the under side of partition 8. Secured to the upper surface of base 38 is a plate 45, having an annular groove 46, in which is mounted a series of bearing-balls 47 Secured to the under side of casing 7 is a bearing-plate 48, having an annular rib 49, whichrests upon balls 47. For the purpose of holding the base and its bearing in connection with the casing I mount in suitable ways formed in plate 48 a pair of thin plates 50, adapted to slide longitudinally in the bearing-plate and to enter a groove 51, formed in post 40.

For the purpose of securing the casing 7 at any desired point in its rotation upon its base I provide the following mechanism: A bell-crank lever 52 is pivoted to the outer surface of one of partitions 1.6. To one arm of the said lever I pivot a bolt 53, arranged to slide vertically in the casing and to enter, at its lower end, any one of a series of holes 54:, formed in the upper surface of plate 45. Bolt 53 is held normally out of engagement with plate by means of a spring 55. Attached to the other arm of lever 52 is arod 56, to which is connected a sliding knob 57, which is mounted in the outer wall of the casing. The shank of said knob is provided with a laterally-projecting pin 58, which enters a groove 59, formed in the casing, the arrangement being such that when the knob is drawn outward the bolt 53 is forced downward into engagement with plate 4.5 and is held in that position by turning knob 57 so that pin 58 will engage the outer surface of the casing.

Shelves 20 are designed to hold books and papers, and located below said shelves, under partition 8, is a sliding shelf 60, sliding in ways 61. Said shelf GOis adapted to be drawn outward into the position shown in Fig. 3 and used as a writing-desk.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a cabinet, the combination with a casing divided into an upper and a lower section by means of a transverse partition, a pivot secured to the under side of said partition, a fixed base carrying an upright post provided 7 in its upper end with a socket adapted to re ceive said pivot, a pair of vertical partitions arranged on opposite sides of the center of each of said upper and lower sections thus dividing each section into three compartments, a drawer, extending across the casing, mounted in the central compartment of the upper section and adapted to be projected from either end thereof, two series of drawers mounted in the central compartment of the lower sec tion on opposite sides of the pivot-supporting post, the drawers of the two series being adapted to slide independently of each other, and to be projected from opposite sides of the casing, substantially as described.

2. In a cabinet, the combination with a casing divided into an upper and a lower section by means of a transverse partition, a pair of vertical partitions arranged on opposite sides of the center of each of said upper and lower sections thus dividing each section into three compartments, a drawer, extending across the casing, mounted in the central compartment of the upper section and adapted to be projected from either end thereof, and two series of drawers mounted in the central compartment of the lower section, the draw ers of the two series being adapted to slide independently of each other and to be projected from opposite sides of the casing, substantially as set forth.

3. Inacabinet, the combination with a casing divided into an upper and a lower section by means of a transverse partition, a pair of vertical partitions arranged on opposite sides of the center of each of said upper and lower sections thus dividing each section into three parts, a drawer, extending across the casing, mounted in the central compartment of the upper section and adapted to be projected from either end thereof, two series of drawers mounted in the central compartment of the lower section, the drawers of the two series being adapted to slide independently of each other and to be projected from opposite ends of the compartment, a shelf mounted in one of the outer compartments of the lower section, and an eXtensionshelf mounted in suit able ways on said first-mentioned shelf, substantially as described.

4. In a cabinet, the combination with a casing divided into an upper and a lower section by means of a transverse partition, a pivot secured to the under side of said partition, a base, carrying an upright post provided in its upper end with a socket adapted to receive said pivot, a pair of vertical partitions arranged on opposite sides of the center of each of said upper and lower sections thus dividing each section into three compartments, a drawer, extending across said casing, mounted in the central compartment of the upper section and adapted to be projected from either end thereof, two series of drawers mounted in the central compartment of the lower section on opposite sides of the pivotsupporting post, the drawers of the two series being adapted to slide independently of each other, and to be projected from opposite sides of the casing, and a shelf mounted below one of the compartments of the upper section and adapted to be drawn out into position to be used as a desk, substantially as set forth.

5. In a cabinet, the combination with a casing divided into an upper and a lower section by means of a transverse partition, a pivot secured under said partition, a base, carrying an upright post provided in its upper end with a socket adapted to receive said pivot, a pair of vertical partitions arranged on opposite sides of the center of each of saidupper and lower sections thus dividing each section into three compartments, a drawer mounted in the central compartment of the upper section and adapted to be projected from either end thereof, two'series of drawers mounted in the central compartment of the lower section on opposite sides of the pivot-supporting post, the drawers of the two series being adapted to slide independently of each other and to be projected from opposite sides of the casing, a shelf mounted in the casing below one of the outer compartments of the upper ICO section and adapted to be drawn out into position to be used as a desk, and means for preventing the rotation of the casing, substantially as described.

6. Ina cabinet, the combination with a casing divided into an upper and a lower section by means of a transverse partition, a pivot secured under said partition, a base, carrying an upright post provided in its upper end with a socket adapted to receive said pivot, a pair of vertical partitions arranged on opposite sides of the center of each of said upper and lower sections thus dividing each section into three compartments, a drawer mounted in the central compartment of the upper section and adapted to be projected from either end thereof, two series of drawers mounted in the central compartment of the lower section on opposite sides of the pivot-supportin g post, the drawers of the two series being adapted to slide independently of each other and to be projected from opposite sides of the casing, a shelf mounted in the casing be- 7 hi FERDINAND NORKUS.
