WELL OR CISTERN CLEANER.

Beit known that I, HEZEKIAH S. LOWDER- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Well or Cistern Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in well or cistern cleaners, and the object of my vinvention is the provision of a simple, inexpensive, and durable device of this character which will be easy to operate and which will clean the well or cistern in a thorough and perfect manner, and thus prove a practical and useful article for the desired purpose.

The invention consists of a well or cistern cleaner embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.

Figure l represents a vertical sectional view thereof, showing thev valve closed and the parts in their normal position. Fig. 2 represents a similar view with the parts in the position they assume when the device is cleaning or removing the sediment or dirt from a well or cistern. Fig. 3 represents a bottom plan view of the device.

In the drawings the letter A designates the bucket or receptacle of my invention, which is of conical or tapering shape toward its upper portion and is formed with the conical dome B, forming the air space or compartment C, and this dome is provided with a central opening D, surrounded by a ring or iiange E, which is provided with interior screw-threads F, the purpose of which will appear.

To the open lower end of the bucket is hinged at Gr the air-tight fitting bottom Il, carrying the packing-ring I-I, which is securely closed against the bucketby means of the hasp-andstaple connection J, and the bottom is further provided with a series of legs or supports K, in this instance of bail-shape made from flat strips of metal and with a central opening L. Secured to the inside of the bottom at M is the iiap-valve N, of circular shape, which is preferably made of leather, rubber, or other suitable flexible material, and upon this valve is secured a plate O, having an eye or staple P, which is connected to the lower endof the rod Q. This rod extends upward through the central opening in the dome of the bucket to within reach of the person at the top of the well or cistern, and is connected to the cap R, which is provided with the cross-bar or handle S, and said cap fits snugly upon the upper end of the air-tube T, said tube having its lower end threaded and engaging the flange on the dome of the bucket.

To make the connection between the airtube and bucket'jrigid and air-tight, I provide v .the bottom of the well. The cap which iits on the airtube is then raised, which carries with it the rod, which in turn lifts the valve, and the inrush of water into the bucket carries with it all dirt or sediment, and the well is thus cleaned in a rapid and perfect manner.

I claim- A well or cistern cleaner consisting of the bucket, having the conical top or dome, the bottom connected air-tight to said bucket and having a flexible upward-opening valve, the rod having its lower end connected to said valve and extending upward to the top of the well or cisternthe cap connected to the upper end and provided with a handle, the airtube having its upper end fitting in the cap and having its lower end connected to the top of the bucket, the conicalshaped bearing resting upon the top of the bucket and having an opening to receive the air-tube and the packing-ring or washer bearing against the under side of the bearing and the ring screwed upon the air-tube and fitting tightly against the upper side of the bearing to form a perfectly air-tight connection between the airtube and bucket.
