Description

(No Model.) r
L. H. NEUDEGKEB.
- COMBINED TOBACCO TAG AND BADGE.
No. 557,866. Patented Apr. 7, 1896.
pix/MW AFTEIRNKY NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD II. NEUDEOKER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
COMBINED TOBACCO-TAG AND BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 557,866, dated April 7, 1896.
Application filed January 22, 1896. Serial No. 576,375. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEONARD H. NEU- DECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Tobacco-Tag and Badge, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sheet-metal tags such as are commonly em ployed as a vehicle for affixing trade-marks to plug-tobacco, and has for its object to provide a tag of novel construction adapted not only as a vehicle for trade-marks, but for use as a badge to be worn on the lapel of a coat.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view of a piece of plug-tobacco with tag attached. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the tag. Fig. 3 illustrates three views of the tagnamely, a front view and two edge viewsone showing the pin-hole and the other the angle locking-slot. Fig. & is an edge view of the tag, showing the pin inserted through the pin-hole, but not engaged with the angle locking-slot. Fig. 5 is a rear view of the tag, showing the pin in serted through the pin-hole and engaged with the angle locking-slot. Fig. 6 shows a modification in the tag. Here a plural number of holes are in the cutting-flange.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the front surface of the metal tag, on which any design, emblem, or symbol suitable for a trade-mark may be printed, im pressed, embossed, or photographed. In the present instance the front surface bears the representation of a five-pointed star. This front surface A is provided with a backwardprojecting flange 1),, extending all around, said flange having at the top a pin-hole e and at the bottom or diametrically opposite this pin-hole an angle slot 0 c.
The device described up to this point constitutes the tobacco-tag.
This tag is affixed by pressing the cutting-flange 1) into the plugtobacco. The flange cuts its way in. This backwardproj ectin g cutting-flange b,extending all around, is provided for a double purposeto wit, first, as a means by which the tag may be affixed to a piece of plug-tobacco, and, second, as a means in which openings are provided through which a pin may be inserted and locked from disengagement when it is desired to convert the tag into a badge.
I may dispense with the angle slot and use a straight slot or a plural number of holes g, as in Fig. 6. 7
When the device has been detached from the tobacco plug, it is convertibleinto a badge by inserting an ordinary pin f in the hole e. This pin may then be passed through the cloth of the lapel of a coat, and by inserting the point end of the pin into the slot or into one of the plural holes the device will be held secure against detachment.
It is to be understood that the specific shape or contour of the tag shown in the drawings is not material an d that it may be varied as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A combined tobacco-tag and badge comprising a front face part having a backwardprojecting cutting-flange, b, which is continuous or extends all around, said flange provided with a hole, e, and diametrically opposite said hole with a locking-opening, whereby a pin may be inserted through said hole and its point end engaged with the said locking-opening.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LEONARD H. NEUDECKER.
