Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HORATIO WILLARD, OF PLAINFIELD, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEO. F. ADAMS, QF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVED TRANSFER-SWITCH.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,4911, dated June 12, 1866.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, HoRA'rIo WILLARD, of Plainfield, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Switches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ofthe same, in which- F1' gurel is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a section through the several tracks near the segmental bar D.
This invention relates to an improvement in railroad-switches known as f transferswitches, and it consists in pivoting a section of the main track at one end and attaching the other to a segmental tie or beam which rests on friction-rollers set so as to raise the section off its bed when moved laterally in line with the side tracks, so that it may be more easily moved, and so that, when in line with the main track, it will rest firmly on its bed and not be injured by the passage of trains..
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several iigures.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A A are the rails of the movable section of the main track, and B B B B the side tracks. The section AA is pivoted, as shown at O,the other end being attached to a segmental tie or bar, D, which rests on friction-rollers s s s, &c., which are set so as to raise the section off its bearings as it is moved out from the main track. The segmental bar D is diminished from the center of the main track, as shown, for the same purpose..
The section of track may be turned out by means of a crank operating cog-Wheels that mesh into cogs on the4 under side and outer end of the segmental bar, (marked D,) or in any other convenientl manner.
The usual target-signal to indicate the position of the track may be placed as at E.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is
Pivoting the movable or transfer section of track at one end and attaching the other end to a segmental tie or bar, formed as shown, and resting on friction-rollers, so arranged as to raise the section from its bed, for the purpose substantially as set forth.
HORATIO WILLARD.
Vitnesses G. F. ADAMS, HosEA S. WHITNEY.
