Description

Arrivi* Prion;
JOHNC. WOLLERMAN, OF BIKNELL, INDIANA.
KITCHEN- CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,163, dated February 4, 1896.
Application filed .T une 11, 1895.
To all whom4 it may concern: l
Beit known that 1, JOHN C. WOLLERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bicknell, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Kitchen'- Cabinet, of which the following is a speciication. Y
My invention relates to kitchen-cabinets, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient construction and arrangement of parts, including' a bin constructed in the form of a drawer, and adapted to be removed from its normal position within the easing and `supported upon tracks or guides, which are connected to and are moved to assume their operative or folded positions by means of said bin orldrawer. h
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will `be particularly pointed out in the appended claims. g
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cabinet constructed in accordance with my invention, the bin or drawer being shown in its folded position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bin extended or withdrawn from the casing and supported upon the tracks or guides provided therefor. Fig. 3 is a side view with the wall of the casing partly broken away to show thepositions of y the parts when the bin is in its folded position. Fig. 4 is a similar view to show the positions of the parts when the bin is extended or withdrawn from the casing and showing in dotted lines the positions of the parts when the bin is partly folded and before the tracks or guides have beenf elevated to the folded position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
l designates a casing, preferably constructed with a table-top 2 and having inits front side an opening for the reception of a bin or drawer 3, the front side of said bin or drawer iitting the opening in the front of the casing and serving to close the same when the drawer is in its retracted or folded position. The bin or drawer is provided at its sides with rollers 4, mounted in stirrups 5 and adapted to traverse parallel tracks or guides 6, arranged constan no, 552,464.. (no model.)
tiguous to the side walls of the casing, and pivotallyconnected to said tracks or guides lare the track-extensions 7, which are adapted to be arranged 4either in a vertical or in an vapproximately horizontal position in continu- .ation of the main portion of the tracks or guides to receive and support the drawer when extended, as shown in Fig. 2. Said track or guide extensions are provided with npturned front extremities 8 to form stops to Alimit the forward movement of the drawer and thus prevent the dismounting of the rollers therefrom, f
The frame-bars or moldings 9 on the casing lat the sides of the openin g in the front thereof are provided with movable sections lO, which are secured to and carried by thetrack or guide extensions, and are adapted, "when the track or guide extensions are in their ver-` tical or folded positions, to fit in their places at the sides of the opening in the casing and thus complete the frame-bars 'or `moldings thereof. The ,removal yof said movable sections of the frame-bars or moldings provides space for the track or guide extensions to swing down at their front ends from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Y
The means for extending and folding the movable portions of the tracks or guides consist of jointed arms ll having upper arms, l2, and lower arms, 13, pivotally connected at their contiguous extremities and mounted at their remote ends, respectively, upon the drawer and the track or guide extensions, `whereby when the drawer is drawn out the track or guide extensions are thrown to their horizontal or operative positions, and when the drawer is returned to the casin g or frame the track or guide extensions are folded.. In order to prevent the connected extremities of the sections of the arms from dropping and hence swinging in the opposite direction from that indicated in the drawings, one of the sections is provided with a stop-lug or car 14, which engages the edge of the other section or member when the arms reach a position with the sections thereof approximately in alignment.
In the construction illustrated in the drawings, the bin or drawer is provided with a plurality of compartments separated by a ICO partition 15,' and a kneading-board 1G is mounted to slide laterally over said compartments upon guides 17 with their upper edges above the upper edge of the partition, and by this construction the board may be arranged to cover either of the compartments or expose that from which it is desired to remove flour, meal, or other material.
The cabinet is made of such a height that the top thereof is adapted to serve as a table, and, therefore, it will be seen that the improved device constitutes a safe or cabinet, a table, and a flour or meal receptacle, thus economizing space and providing` a compact device capable of performing a variety of functions.
It will be understood, furthermore, that the improvement may be applied-with facility to a store counter, the arrangement of the drawer and tracks being identical with that hereinbefore described.
The construction of the connections between the drawer and the guide extensions is such as to allow free movement of the drawer independent ofthe guide extensions after the latter have reached their normal or operative positions in alignment with the guides, whereby greater or less projection of the drawer may be attained without affecting the position of the guide extensions. Furthermore, the pivotal points of connection of the lower extremities of the jointed arms are arranged contiguous to the pivotal points of the guide extensions, whereby when the drawer is pushed back into the easing it reaches a position adjacent to the limit of its movement before the jointed arms are extended sufficiently to communicate motion to the guide extensions. By reason of the points of connection of the jointed arms being close to the pivotal points of the guideextensions a very slight movement of the drawer after the jointed arms reach their extended positions is necessary to fold the guide extensions.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention,
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination with a casing, of a drawer adapted to iit in an opening` in the casing, guides arranged in the casing to support the drawer, guide extensions connected to said guides and adapted to be folded or arranged in alignment with the guides, and connections between the guide extensions and the drawer, whereby motion is communicated from the drawer to the guide extensions to move them to their operative or folded positions, the drawer being free to move independently of the guide extensions after the latter reach their extended or operative positions, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a casing and a i drawer adapted to iit therein, of guides arranged within the casing to support the drawer, pivotal guide extensions adapted to be folded within the casing or extended in alignment with the guides, terminal stops at the front ends of the guides to limit the outward movement of the drawer, and connections between the drawer and the guides whereby motion is communicated from the former to the latter to move the guide extensions to their folded or operative positions, the drawer being free to move independently of the guide extensions after the latter reach their extended or operative positions, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a casing and a drawer fitted in an opening therein, of guides arranged within the casing to support the drawer, guide extensions adapted to be folded within the casing or extended in alignment with the guides, said guide extensions being inclined downward toward their front ends when in their operative position and being provided with terminal stops, said drawer having rollers to traverse the guide`extensions, and connections between the drawer and the guides whereby motion is communicated from the former to the latterto'fold and extend the guides, said connections being extensible to provide for free movement of the drawer independent of the guide extensions after the latter have reached their extended or operative positions, substantially as specified.
et. The combination with aeasing,a drawer adapted to fit in an opening therein, guides arranged within the casing to support the drawer, guide extensions pivotally connected to the guides and adapted to be folded within the casin g or extended in alignment with the guides, and connections between the drawer and the guide extensions, whereby motion is communicated from the former to the latter to fold and extend the guide extensions, of molding or frame-sections carried by the guide extensions and adapted to assume their normal positions in contact with the front ofthe casing at opposite ends of the drawer when the guide extensions are folded, substantially as speciiied.
5. The combination with a casing, guides arranged therein and a drawer mounted upon said guides and adapted to be arranged within the casing, of guide extensions adapted to be folded withinv the casing and extended in alignment with the guides to support the drawer when withdrawn from the casing, and jointed arms connecting the drawer with the guide extensions, said jointed arms having pivotally-connected sections pivoted at their remote extremities respectively to the drawer and extensions, the points of connection of the jointed arms with the guide extensions being contiguous to the pivots of the latter, whereby motion is communicated from the drawer to the guide extensions only when the drawer is contiguous to the limit of its in- IOO IIO
ward or rearward movement, to cause the lowering,` of the guide extensions as soon as the forward movement of the drawer eommences and Cause the folding of said guide extensions when the drawer has approximately reaehed its folded position, substantially as speeied. l
6. The combination with a easing, guides arranged therein, and a drawer mounted upon said guides and adapted to be arranged within the easing, of guide extensions adapted to be folded Within the easing and extended in alignment with the guides to support the drawer when withdrawn from the easing, and jointed arms connecting the drawer with the 'LeA guide extensions, said jointed arms having upper and lower sections pivoted together and pivotally connected at their remote extremities, respectively, to the drawer and extensions, one of the sections being provided with the stop-lug or ear to limit the movement of the arm, substantially as speeied.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing` as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
'JOHN C. WOLLERMAN.
