M. SIMON. TABLE AND BRACKET.
No. 553,267. Patented Jam 21, 1-896.
WITNESSES:
INVENTOH UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS SIMON, OF IVATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
TABLE AND BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,267, dated January 21, 1896.
Application filed August 15, 1895. Serial No.559,368. (No model.)
of the United States, and a resident of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new an d useful Improvements in Tables and Brackets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to tables, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be attached to or connected with a bedstead and used as a brackettable or for invalids, or which maybe placed on the floor and used in the ordinary manner.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a bed provided with my improved bracket-table; Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2; Fig. 3, a plan view of a part of the construction shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a side elevation of my improvement when used as an ordinary table; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 a plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 5.
In the practice of my invention I employa plate or board A, and secured thereto on opposite-sides of the bottom and centrally thereof are yoke-shaped brackets B, to the bottom of which are pi votally connected rods C, which are provided on their outer ends with spherical heads D,which are adapted to be supported in spring-sockets E, connected with each side of the head of the bedstead, as shown in Fig. 1, but one of said spring-sockets being shown. Arranged transversely of the rods C is a plate F, provided at each end with a transverse slot G, through which passes a set'screw g, by which connection with the rods C is made, and pivotally connected with the plate or board A, and centrally of the bottom thereof, is a bar H, which is adapted to be folded into a slot h, form ed in the bottom of the plate or board, as shown in Fig. 2. The bar H is provided with perforations or holes h, adapted to receive a sliding screw-threaded bolt 72 connected with the plate F, and said bar H is also adapted to pass through a longitudinal slot 7L3 formed in the plate F. As thus constructed and arranged it will be seen that the plate or board A constitutes a simple and convenient table, bracket or shelf for use while reclining in bed, and the position of the table may be adjusted by means of the bar l-I and'the sliding bolt 7L2 and the pivotal connection of the rods C, which in addition to being capable of being folded into the position shown in Fig. 1 may also be revolved on their connection with the brackets B, as shown at 2), Figs. 2 and at. I also connect with the plate or board A, by means of side arms, K, a back-support or rest 7a, which may by held in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 or folded backward into the position shown in dotted lines, in which position it will serve as a support for the back of the invalid when the latter desires to sit erect or partially so, the connection of the side arms, K, with the plate or board and also with the rest or back-support being a pivotal connection, and connected with the rods C are chains or other devices C, by which the device is suspended from the top of the head of the bedstead.
IVhen it is desired to use the plate or board A as an ordinary table, the rods C are extended in the position shown in Fig. 4, in this case constituting legs to support the table, and the plate or board A is provided on its other sides, at right angles to the legs C, with two additional legs L, each of which is provided with a head M, adapted to enter a cavity or recess m in the bottom of theplate or board A, said cavity or recess being provided with an extension having recesses m at its side, into which the head M is adapted to enter, as clearly shown in Figs. 4:, 5, and 6. In securing these parts together the head M of the leg L is inserted into the hole or opening on, and then shoved inward, so that the projections on the head M will enter thelateral recess m where the heads will be securely held in place by means of transverse plates N, which are connected with the legs L, as shown in Fig. 4, said legs being provided on their inner surfaces with holes or openings 0, having down ward extensions P, said plate N being provided with projections 71, adapted to enter said downward extensions P of the holes or openings 0. Each of the legs L and C may be provided with these openings and each of the plates N may be provided with corresponding'projections n, if desired, and I prefer to employ this construction, and in any event the plates N must be so formed and so connected with the legs as to hold the latter in a permanent and stationary position.
. By means of this construction it Will be seen that I provide a simple and effective device which may be used in connection with a bedstead, as and for the purposes described, or which may be used as an ordinary table, saiddevice being simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
It is evident that changes in, and modifications of, the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a plate or board, of rods connected with the sides thereof and provided at their ends with spherical heads which are adapted to be held in spring sockets connected with the head of the bedstead, said rods being connected transversely by means of a plate and said plate or board being provided with a bar which is connected therewith and which is adapted to be adjusted to any desired position in connection with said plate, and means connected with the rods for suspending the same from the head of the bedstead, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a plate or board, of brackets as B, connected with the bottom thereof, side rods pivotally connected with said brackets, and provided with spherical heads which are adapted to be supported in spring sockets connected with the side of the head of a bedstead and means for suspending said rods and the table connected therewith from the top of the head of the bedstead and means for adjusting the position of the plate or board on said rods, substantially as shown and described,
The combination with a plate or board, of brackets as B, connected with the bottom thereof, side rods pivotally connected with said brackets, and provided with spherical heads which are adapted to be supported in spring sockets connected with the sides of the head of a bedstead, and means for suspending said rods and the table connected therewith, from the head of the bedstead, and means for adjusting the position of the plate or board on said rods, consisting of a bar pivotally connected with the inner end of said with from the top of the head of the bedstead,
and means for adjusting the position of the plate or board on said rods, consisting of a bar pivotally connected-with the inner end of said plate or board and a transverse plate connected with said rods, said bar being provided with holes or openings and said plate with a sliding bolt adapted to pass therethrough, and said plate being provided with a rest or support as [6, which is pivotally connected therewith by means of side arms and adapted to be folded in such manner as to form a rest or support for the back, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 5th day of August,1895.
