SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,066, dated November 19, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. CAMPBELL, of Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasp-Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in a combined hasp and padlock; and it con sists of the novel features of construction and relative arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in the specification, clearly illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming part of this application, in which like characters indicate like parts wherever they occur.

Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a portion of a trunk or box, showing my invention applied thereto and the padlock locked. Fig. 2 represents an end view of Fig. 1, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1-, showing the padlock unlocked and the hasp turned away from the staple.

Referring to the drawings, a represents the hasp, having near one end a staple-receiving slot at and at its other end a hinged member, a portion a of the hasp adjacent to said slot'constituting a guard for the staple-attaching plate hereinafter described.

I) represents an attaching-plate having a hinged member engaged in the hinged member of the hasp. The plate b is provided with holes for attaching screws 1), and said holes are so located at one side of the hinge that when the hasp is raised the screws are exposed, but when the hasp is locked it will cover the plate and therefore prevent access to the screws.

(1 represents a lock-casing attached to the hasp and provided with a bolt d and suitable key-operative devices for projecting and retarding the same, the bolt being arranged to extend over the slot a when projected.

e represents a staple or socket, which is formed on an attaching-plate 8, adapted to be attached to the front part of the trunk or box. Said staple is formed to enter the slot a and to receive the projected bolt, as shown in Fig. 2. The attaching-plate e is formed to be covered by the guard a when the hasp is locked, so that the screws 6 which hold said plate and the staple e, are covered and made inaccessible by the said guard.

It will be seen that the attaching-plates b and 6 can be readily attached to the parts to be locked, the hasp being adapted to be sprung back to uncover said plates, and when the hasp is locked it covers and guards said plates, thus preventing the unauthorized removal of the lock.

I have shown the hasp made in two sections 3 and 4, hinged together at 5, the section 3 being the longer, and provided with a lock and hinged member and the staple-receiving slot and the guard. The section 4 has a hinged member at each end, one of said members being engaged with the hinged member in section 3 and the other with the hinged member of the attaching-plate. This construction enables the plate b to be attached at an angle to the surface to which the plate e is attached.

I have shown my improved hasp-padlock applied to a trunk or other box If, the plate I) being secured to a cover 25 and the plate 6 being secured to the body portion F; but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to this use of my improved hasp-padlock, as the same can be applied to doors or covers generally or can be used in any desired place.

Having thus explained the nature of my invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, what I claim, and desire to secure by-Letters Patent, is-- The improved hasp lock comprising a hasp composed of section 3 having at one end a hinged member, and at the other end a staple receiving slot, a lock rigidly attached to the section 3, and having a bolt arranged to be projected over the slot, an attaching plate I) having a hinged member engaged with a hinged member on the section 3, and screw holes at one side of the hinged member, the said plate I) being arranged so that two subscribing Witnesses, this 17th day of the attaching screws are exposed when the September, A. D. 1894.
