(No Model.) G. W. LA BAW.

UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. LA BAW, OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY.
CIGAR-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,806, dated October 29, 1895.
Application filed January 7 1895. Serial No. 534,005- (No model.)
New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
Match-boxes have heretofore been madewith a longitudinal slot, into which the match is inserted and-rubbed along up on a roughened surface, the end of the cigar being inserted into an opening in the box. Such boxes have usually been provided with a sliding drawer for the matches.
In my present improvement the box is made in two parts hinged together, and there is in the bottom of the box a partition, at one end of the match-reoeptacle,-of non-conducting material to prevent heat reaching the matches, and the cover of the match-receptacle is within the lid of the box and fitted in such a manner that it canbe slipped out, and the upper surface of this slide is roughened and is closely adjacent to a slot in the top of the box, through which the match is inserted and rubbed along upon such roughened slide, and there is an opening at the end of the box into which the end of the cigar can be inserted while the match is held vertically, or nearly so, and burns upwardly, and it is protected from currents of air by the surrounding box.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the match-box. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3is a cross-section at the line 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 an end view partially in section.
The match-box is composed of two principal parts-namely, the bottom A and the top A'and'these are hinged together at 9, and there is a spring-catch at 10 that acts to keep the parts of the box together'when the top is shut down.
In the bottom of the box there is a partition at 8, which is adapted to prevent heat reaching matches in the match-receptacle, and to effect this object such partition is made of two thicknesses of sheet metal with a layer of asbestos paper or similar material between the same, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
Along in the top A of the box there is a longitudinal slit 6, which is preferably made with enlarged ends, as seen in Fig. 1, and the box is open at one end, as seen at 4, for the reception of the end of the cigar.
Within the cover A and closely adjacent to the hinges 9 there is a slide 5, that is received at its edges in longitudinal grooves 7 within the edges of the cover, so that the slide can be slipped in and out, and the upper surface of this slide is roughened, so that the match can be ignited by being rubbed along upon the same, and when the cover of the box is shut down the end of this slide 5 interlocks with the upper edge of the partition 8, so that the rubbing along of the match upon the slide does not disturb the same, and it will be now'apparent that after the box has been opened and the match removed from the receptacle the cover can be swung down and closed again and the match inserted into one end of the longitudinal slot 6 and the box held in a convenient position for introducing the cigar at the opening 4 in the end of the said box, and then the match is rubbed along and ignited and held in such a position that the flame burns up the wood and the cigar is lighted by the contact therewith of the flame.
I claim as my invention- 1. The cigar lighter formed of a box the upper and lower portions of which are hinged together, a partition in the bottom for the end of. the match receptacle, a slide received within grooves in the cover of the box adjacent to the hinges and having a roughened surface, there being a longitudinal slot in the top of the cover for the insertion of the match, and an opening at the end of the box for receiving the end of the cigar, substantially as set forth.
2. The cigar lighter formed of a box the upper and lower portions of which are hinged together, a non-conducting partition in the bottom for the end of the match receptacle,
a slide received Within grooves in the cover of the box adjacent to the hinges and having a roughened surface, there beinga longitudinal slot in the top of the cover for the insertion of the match, and an opening at the end of the box for receiving the end of the cigar, the end of the slide interlocking with the top end of the partition so as to be held in place, substantially as set forth.
. Signed by me this 4th day of January, 1895.
