DEVICE FOR LOADING WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 5 14,543, dated August 13, 1895.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MCLRAN, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Powersville, in the county of Putnam and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefulImpI-ovements in Devices for Loading Wagonsg and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which'-- Figure l is a perspective view of my apparatus or device for loading wagons, showing the same as it appears when in use, but with the team unhitched from the loading-shovel; and Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same with sogne of the parts shown in section.

' This invention has relation to means for loading wagons with earth or gravel, manure, sand, and similar material which is loaded in bulk and in large quantities at a time;
. and it consists in the construction and cornhitched, and an inclined plane or platform B,
consisting of two or more parallel planks b h, with a narrow opening a between them, and connected to each -other by cleats or crosspeces c c onthe under side, is hooked upon the headboard of the wagon-box by means of hooks O C at one end, while its other or lower end where it rests upon the ground is provided with prongs DD, which by entering the ground will prevent the platformB from slipping. Thus it will be seen that by means of the hooks C C at one end and pointed teeth or prongs D D at the other end the platform B is easily and firmly maintained in its inof two or more parallel planks'e e, with anopen spacef between them and connected to each other by a series of transverse cleats or cross-pieces g g on the under side, is supported permanently upon a framework or scaffolding G, one end of which is provided with casters H H and also with hinged rods I I, (one on each side,) which are bentat their outer ends to form hooks t' i'. The inclined platform E extends beyond its supportingframe Gat both ends and is provided at its lowermost end with an anchor-plate J, having an aperturej, for the insertion of the anchorpin K. The loading-shovel preferably made of sheet metal and provided at its rear end with a pair of handles ZZ. By means of the bail M it is connected to a doubletree N of such length that the si-ngletrees n n will swing clear 0f the two inclined platforms B and E and of the wagon A between them during the operation of loading the wagon.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the manner of using this loading attachmept or device will readily be understood. Thewwagon having been backed up closeto the manure-heap, (or
gravel bank, as the case may be,) the team is unhitched and hitched to the singletrees n n of the loading-shovel L. Next the two platforms B and E are unloaded and connected to the wagon-box at the opposite ends of the same, as hereinbefore described and shown on the drawings, care being taken to force the prongs D D appertaining to platform B irmly into the ground and also to drive the anchor-pin K into the ground through the aperture in the anchor-plate .I at the lower end of the loadingplatform VE. By finally hooking the side rods I I over the fellies of the hind wheels both the inclined platforms B and E will be in position ready for use.
To load the wagon the loading-shovel L is first driven into the manure-heap until it is full, and is then, with its load, pulled up the inclined loading-platform E, the team going on opposite sides of the platform and wagon, while the man in charge walks up the platform behind the shovel and guides it in its ascent by means of the handles Z Z. When the top of the platform is reached, he lifts the handles and dumps the load into the bottom of the wagon, when the movement ofthe team will draw the shovel over onto the platform B. After reaching the ground the shovel is again pulled up to the place where it is to beloaded, filled, and again pulled up the inclined plat-- form E and dropped into the wagon, and this operation is repeated until the wagon is full. In practice it will be found convenient and expedient not to dump the loading-shovel and relieve it of its load until near the headboard, so as to deliver the load up against this,as
shown on Fig. 1, because this facilitates the carrying of the empty shovel up over the headboard by slidingit over the load or loads already deposited in the wagon upon the raised end of platform B.
IIaving thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesl. The combination, with a wagon A, ofthe triangular frame G, the hooked rods pivotally connected therewith, the casters at the inner end thereof, the inclined platform supported by said frame provided at its lower end with an apertured anchor plate and anehor pin, the loading Shovel provided with handles, and the doubletree connected with said shovel and projecting laterally beyond the sides of the platform and wagon, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the Wagon A the inclined platforms E and B, connected removably to lthe wagon at opposite ends thereof, the loadingshovel L, provided with the handles Z Z, and doubletree M of such a length that it will straddle both the inclined platform andthe intermediate wagon-box; substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
