J. M. HOOKER, Jr.
(N 0 Model.)

Patented July 2, 1895.
, 0 V @Houmzg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES M. HOOKER, JR., ,OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO NANNIE L. HOOKER AND JAMES ROGERS, OF SAME PLACE.
POCKET-COMPANION.
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,162, dated July 2, 1895.
Application filed February 2, 1895. Serial No. 537,106. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. HOOKER, Jr., of Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Companions; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference to marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improved pocket-companion for gentlemen; andits object is to provide a compact, neat, serviceable, and con- [5 venient receptacle combining in one case holders for matches, change, stamps, manicure articles, and a cigar-cutter, as will be hereinafter described in detail, and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
2o Whichv Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete companion with two lids raised. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, the covers being indicated in dotted lines only. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line 3 3, Fig. 2.
The companion is substantially rectangular in contour, and consists of an outer rectangular shell A, having a bottom A, front B, back B, and ends 0 O, as shown in Figs. 1
0 and 2. The shell is divided bya central longitudinal partition D, and subdivided at one side of partitionD by a transverse partition E, extending from partition D to the back B, forming two chambers 1 2, the former for 3 5 change, jewelry, &c., and the latter for stamps. The chamber 1 is closed by a cover F, which is hinged to or over the top of partition D, and chamber 2 is closed by a cover G, likewise hinged to or over partition D, as indi- 4o cated in the drawings.
' At the front side of the case, parallel with front B, is a longitudinal division I), the space 3 between partition I) and front B forming a receptacle for a manicure-tool H or eraser,
&c., as indicated in Fig. 3. Between partititions b D, near the end 0, is a transverse partition I, the large compartment 4 at the inner side of said partition being adapted to contain matches, 850. An opening 11 is made in the bottom of the smaller compartment 5 at the outer side of partition D, and a round openingo is made in the end 0, above opening 6, for the introduction of the butt of a cigar.
The compartments 3 4 5 are closed by a single cover J, which is hinged to or over the partition D, as shown, and to the end of said cover adjoining end 0 is attached a knife j, which, when the cover is closed, shears past opening 0 and will cutoff the butt of a cigar placed therein, the butt dropping out through 6 opening i, as is evident.
On the outside of front B is a scratchingsurface I) for matches.
The whole arrangement is contained in a case small enough to be comfortably carried in the pocket, is convenient, and will be appreciated by travelers, smokers, and gentlemen generally.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is
1. The herein described pocket companion comprising the case having the longitudinal compartment 3, the match compartment 4, the change compartment'l, stamp compartment 2, and cutter-compartment 5; with the separate hinged covers for compartments 1 and 2, and the hinged cover for compartments 3, 4, 5, combined, said cover having a knife on one end for the purpose and substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture the herein described case, composed of the shell A, having partitions D, E, b, and I, and openings t' and o; with the covers F, G and J, the latter having a knife j, all constructed and adapted for the purposes set forth.
3. A pocket companion comprising a single hollow case divided by partitions into a plurality of compartments, and hinged covers 0 for said compartments; one of said compartments having an opening in its bottom, and also an opening in its side, and the cover for this compartment having a knife secured to its edge in position to out the butt end of a 5; cigar inserted in the side opening, as the cover is closed, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of Ioo two witnesses.
