- THOMAS MCD OWELL, OF NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE OARTER-ORUME COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
MEMORANDUM-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,646, dated April 2, 1895.
Application filed October 10, 1894. Serial No. 525,459- (No model.)
To otZZ whom it mag concern:
'Be itknown that I, THOMAS MCDOWELL, of Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements-in Memorandum- Books, of whichthe following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to covers for that class of memorandum books in which the leaves are made detachable from the cover and which are used with a black leaf for the purpose of transferring onto one page a memorandum written on another.
The object of the invention isto provide a cover which shall embody means for receiving classified entries and to adapt such means for ready reference.
To this end my invention consists of a cover made up of leaves diifering in size one from another, and provided with characters near their edges; and it further consists in the combination with a memorandum book of the class herein specified, of a cover having a plurality of index or record slips differing in size one from another and each of said slips being provided with characters or words near its edges indicating the nature or character of the entries to be made thereon and which can be observed without separating said slips; and my invention consists in certain other combinations of parts herein described and particularly set forth in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a memorandum book, in connection with which my improved cover is used, the cover being shown with a portion of each of the index or record slips of which it is composed torn away. Fig. 2 shows a memorandum book with the cover open, the leaves of the book being torn away near where they are bound to the cover. Fig. 3 shows a cover composed of record slips differing in iength instead of width and adapted to fold over the end of the book instead of the side thereof as indicated in Fig. 2. Fig. 4. shows the shape of the cover'before it is attached to the leaves of the book. Fig. 5 is an edge view of cover with the end folded and the staple inserted, but without the leaves hereinafter indicated by the reference letter A.
Referring specifically to thedrawings, A represents the leaves of the memorandum book, which may be shaped, printed, folded and bound together in-any suitable and well known manner, not necessary to be herein specifically described. In the drawings the said leaves, A, are bound together and to the cover by wire staples, B, but any other well known means of fastening the leaves to the cover may be employed. One or more carbon leaves may also be bound in with the leaves or attached to the book as usual in books of this class.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a cover 0 composed of record slips a, b, c, d of different widths, the cover opening from the side. The book designed to be used with this form of cover is composed of leaves opening lengthwise. I
Figs. 4, and 5 show clearly the shape of each slip, a, b, c, and d, forming the cover 0. They show the extension of one or more of said slips which fold around and over one end of the leaves, A, of the book before and after folding. The perforations, e, indicate the the holes made by the staples, B, and the dotted lines, f, indicate the folds orlines on which the cover is bent when folded over the end of the leaves A. The printing is omitted from the slips in Fig. 4.
The cover 0 shown in Fig. 3 opens lengthwise, the record strips of which it is composed being of difierent lengths, while the leaves, A, are the same as the leaves, A, shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The ends of the record slips, a, b, c, d, which form the cover of the book, extend below the ends of the leaves, A, so that the characters or words near their ends may be seen without raising the leaves when unfolded.
The record slips which in both cases form the cover, are so arranged that the longest or widest is on the outside, the inside slips varying in size, the smallest being the slip next to 5 the leaves which compose the book. The differences between the sizes of the slips are substantially equal, allowing characters to be printed on each slip which may be seen without separatingthe slips and affording means In V for the rapid separation of the leaves for making entries,
When in position for use, the characters or words near the edge of each slip lie between the edges of two slips, as shown clearly in the drawings.
The ruling or printing on the top of each record slip may correspond to that on the other slips or it may difier as desired. The numbers on the margin of each slip correspond to the number on the checks or leaves, A, of the book.
These covers, and memorandum books provided with the covers, are designed to be used in stores where the entries to be made upon the record slips are of a varying character, and in such stores they are found to be very useful as they save much time and labor, both for the clerk and the cashier in classifying the sales.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a memorandum book cover consisting of a plurality of record slips, each differing from the others in size, and characters on each slip near its edge and located between said edge and the edge of the adjacent slip so that they can be observed without separating said slips, as set forth.
2. In combination with a memorandum book of the class herein specified, a cover con sisting of a plurality of record slips differing in size one from another, each of said slips being provided with characters near its edge which can be observed without separating said slips, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a memorandum book, a cover therefor consisting of a plurality of record slips differing in size one from the other, the differences being equal in width and extending along the entire side of each slip, and characters on each slip near the edge thereof, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto signed my name.
THOMAS MCDOWELL.
