Be it known. that I, .I AMES H. COOK, .I r., a citizen of theUnitcd States, residing at Homer, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification, reference therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction of a pocket knife, comprising a casing in which a'blade slidingly engages, a pin secured to the blade extending through a slot in the casing'and connected to a plate on the outside, which when turned atan angle to the casing may be employed as a handle to slip the blade in or out, and when turned parallel therewith forms a complementary portion to the handle wh en the blade is opened or closed.

The construction is designed to make what I call a safety pocket knife, that is one which cannot be closed on the hand when using it, also which is free from dirt by having the casing entirely inclosed when the blade is withdrawn and dispensing entirely with the use of springs.

The invention further consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved knife, showing the blade withdrawn and the cover or actuating plate turned slightly from its closed position.. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the blade partly extended. The parts being thus constructed their op eration is as follows: In the closed position of the knifethe hook .I engages over the open end B of the casing and thus closes the only point through which dirt might find access to the interior, the plate proper covering the slot F. To open it, the operator turns the plate at right angles to the casing, in which position the iiat portion E of the pin registers with the longitudinal slot F. Then using the plate as a handle, the knife blade may be slid out of the casing, as shown in Fig. 3 The plate may then be turned parallel with the casing, the hook portion engaging over the butt of lthe casing, as shown in Fig 3, and forming a complementary portion of the handle. In this position the sides of the dat por- ,tion' E of the pin engage against the shoulder I-I at the forward end of the slot, which securely locks the blade against being withdrawn.

To withdraw the blade the operator goes that is, turns the plate to a position at right angles to the casing, sliding the pin through the slot to the butt and then turning the plate upon the pivot, engaging the hook over the open end of the casing. In this position the pin engages against the shoulders H, of the enlargement G at the butt of the casing, which prevents the withdrawal of the blade until the plate is again turned at right angles to the casing. Thus I obtain a knife in which the blade is locked in its closed position, locked in its open position and provided with a casing which is dust proof, obviating all use of springs and the trouble connected therewith. Any desired shape of blade may be used and the pin and plate may be varied also to cover any means of locking the pin by turning it in opening and closing.

NVhat I claim as my invention isl. In a knife, the combination of a hollow case, a blade sliding therein, a pin extending from the base of the blade and entering a longitudinal slot in one side of the case, and a plate secured to the outer end of the pin, adapted to be turned at an angle to the case, adapted to form a handle to move the blade, and to form a complementary portion thereof when the blade is open or closed, substantially as described.
