' .TRY SQUARE. No. 530,894. Patented Decfll, 1894.

LL MHz/@Ly UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'FRANK HOULE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TRY-SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,894, dated December 11, 1894. Application led March 21,1894. Serial. No. 504,533. (No model.)
lo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK IIOULE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, county of Cook, and State oflllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Try-Squares, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to try-squares and will be fully described hereinafter. v
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan of my devlce with the blade at right angles to thev handle. Fig. 2 is also a plan but with part of the handle broken away Vto show the connection between the handle and blade. Fig. 3 1s a plan view of the blade, and Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 Fig. l. Y
A is the handle which is slotted to receive the blade as the handles of try-squares usually are and B is the blade which differs from other blades in having in one end a slot C. This slot has furcations c c with right angular terminations d and when the blade is in place and extends at right angles from the handle two bolts f and g engage with-the terminals and hold the blade firmly in place; but when the blade is to be adjusted to any other angle, the slot permits the blade to be drawn out and given the proper adjustment after which the blade must be secured in place by tightening a thumb nut f on boltf.
'is desired, the blade is The blade may be scaled or marked by oblique lines to indicate various angles so that when any angle less than a right angle drawn to the left to release the bolts from the terminations of the slots and is then deflected until the propel` scale is flush with the face of the handle and then'the thumb nut is tightened.
It will-be observed that this square naturally locks at right angles and therefore the thumb screw need not be disturbed except to lock the blade at a less angle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The try square consisting of a slotted handle, and a blade in said slot, said blade having a furcated opening, a fixed pin passing through the handle and one branch of the opening in the blade, and a bolt passing through the handle and the other branch of the opening in the blade, said bolt having a tightening uut, substantially as described.
I FRANK HoULE.
