Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN K. HAWKINS, voF MoHAWK, TENNESSEE.
wAsHolLl-zn.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,842, dated December 11, 1894. i Application filed February 10. 1894. Serial No. 499,809. (No model.)
To all whom it may cnce7'n:
Be it known that 1 JOHN K. HAwKINs, of Mohawk, in the county of Greene and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new andv useful Improvements in Washboiler Attach ments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying l(Lirawing, which forms part of this specifica My invention relates to an improved Wash boilerattachment; and the object of the same is to provide an improved device for cleansing clothes. l r
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and arrangement of parts herenafter fully described and claimed, and
illustrated by the accompanying drawing which is a Vertical sectional view of my improved device in position in a boiler.`
The boiler is here shown as round, but one of oval or any other preferred shape may be used with equal efiect. Resting therein is the inverted vessel A consisting of a top and sides as shown, and provided with `the cen-l, tral tube B which reaches nearly to the bottom thereof at which point it is provided with the adjustable funnel O adapted to fit as shown and provided on its upper end with the upwardly opening flap valve D for the' purpose presently to be stated. The upper end of the tube has the apertures E. The tube is held in position within vessel A by the upper and lower brace arms F.
G is a cock at the upper end of the vesseh.
In operation the vessel A is removed from the boiler and the clothes packed therein from the lower end until the space between the brace arms F is quite full, as I have foundl the best results accrue when the same are held from play. The vessel thus filled with the soiled articles is then placed in the boiler boiler is about two thirds full of water before the vessel is placed therein so that the latter is well su rrounded. Cook Gremains open and as the Water boils it passes up through the tube B along with the steam to the space above the clothes. Then by closing the cock the steam will accumulate in the upper end vessel A and will attain sufticient pressure to force the water therein downward through the clothes, the valved funnel preventing the same from escaping downward through the tube. ,The cock is again opened to permit the steam to escape and the water flows up through the clothes and tube until level of the water in the ou ter boiler is reached. vThis operation may be continued as long as de sired by closing and opening the valve, cleansing in a most effective manner the articles placed therein.
The clothing may be either wetor dry when f placed in' the receptacle and the soap mayibe either'applied'thereto or to the water direct. By suddenly cooling the upper portion of boiler A so as'to condense the steam therein an upward flow of water through the clothes may be created for rinsing or other purposes. The waterwill immediately descend when air is admitted by opening cock G. p
Havng thus fully described my invention, vwhat-I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ist The combination of-a boiler, a clothes containing vessel closed at its upper end and open at its lower vend adapted to fit within said boiler, and a valve at the said upper or closed end, substantially as shown and'described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
/' JOHN. K. HAwKINs.
