The object of my invention is to provide a machine for grinding cutlery in which a plural number of articles may be ground simultaneously; and also to provide certain means by which the individual article is supported and moved with relation to the grinding surface so that the proper shape may be given to it by the grinding operation.
To this end myinvention consists in details of the several parts making up the apparatus as a whole, and also in their combination, as more particularly hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:Figure l is a detail view in side elevation of a grinding frame with parts cut away in central section to show construction. Fig. 2 is a top View of the bed plate and frame with part broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail view in vertical section of a carriage on enlarged scale. Fig. 4 is a detail view in cross section of the carriage on a plane back of the pivot of the knife holder. Fig. 5 is a detail view in vertical section through the base block and socket. Fig. 6 is a detail view on enlarged scale looking toward the front end of the knife holder. Fig. 7 is a central cross-section through the bearing or hinge of the knife-holder.
In the accompanying drawings the letter Adenotes the frame of the machine that comprises a bed plate B of circular form, legs or supports b and a standard C that supports the carriage E that has a vertical adjustment on the standard. In bearings fast to this carriage is supported the grinder shaft e, and on the lower end of the shaft that is arranged with its axis in line with and directlyover the axial center of the table is secured an annular grinder F. ing ground are grouped about the central grinder on the bed plate and so arranged that the knife blade may be moved transversely of the cutting edgef of the grinder while the latter is in motion. This blank holding carriage G comprises a frame g that is secured to the bed plate, a knife holder it that is mounted on a slide t', abase block arranged in a socket in the front part of the carriage and a lever Z pivotally supported on the carriage and with one end in engagement with the base block so that the vertical position of the latter may be determined by the up and down movement of the lever.
. The slide z' in the operation of the machine is reciprocated in order to carry the whole length of the blank across the grinding surface, and this operation is performed by means of a cam wheel M and the bell crank lever N. The cam wheel M is provided with one or more cams m and it is supported on the frame of the machine in connection with the driving mechanism through the medium of. the worm m and the worm gear wa so arranged that by the rotation of the worm m the cam wheel M is rotated carrying the cams m successively into contact with the shorter end of the bent lever N that is held in yielding contact with the cam by means of the spring at, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The upper end n of the lever engages the slidez' in such manner that as the lever is moved back and forth the slide Will be reciprocated with it. The office of themechanism just described is to move the slide and knife holder supported on it, and the blank (as a knife blank) that is supported in the holder, back and forth so that the surface to be ground will be moved under and across the surface of the grinder in contact with which it is held.

to adjust itself to the upper face of the base plate that is arranged on the proper level to grind the blade so that it shall be thicker on one edge than on the other. This holding of the knife blank at the rear end and the loose support form material features of my invention. The outer end of the lever Z is provided with a weight Z or equivalent device for producing a yielding pressure, the front end Z of the lever engaging a socket is in the base block so that the latter will be forced up against the knife blade and the blade against the surface of the grinder with a yielding pressure depending upon the degree of pressure of the weight Z or an equivalent spring. On the side of the lever thereis arranged a cam plateor bar Z that issecured to theside of the lever as by means of screws passing through openings or slots in the ends of the cam plate. There is a link Z that is secured by a bolt to the slide 11 and the lever passes through an opening in this link (as shown in the enlarged View in Fig. 4 of the drawings) the lower edge of the cam plate resting on the cross bar of the link. As the carriage is supported in rigid bearings the position of the lever will be determined by the position of the lower end of the cam Z at the several successive positions occupied by the slide as it is reciprocated. The objectv of this cam plate is to provide for grinding a plate thicker at the heel than at the point, or, in other Words, for making it tapered from heel to point lengthwise. It Will be seen that by these described devicesa knife blade held in the holder may be ground to the desired taper from heel to point and to the desired shape as to the cutting edge, and the whole will be done automatically after the blade has been once inserted in the holder and the machine set in operation.
An important feature of my invention is comprised in the yielding base block located and operated as described, the upper end of the carriage frame surrounding the socket beingcut awaylengthwise ofthebladeforming a slot of a properwidth to receive it and having also a crosswise slot of awidtltsuitable to receive the grinding edge of the ann ular grinder, these two slots leaving holding points projecting above the several corners of the base block. The upper end of the base block is preferably channeled, as shown in Fig. 3, of the drawings, and the lower end of the socket communicates with a source of water supply by means of apipe p, the reservoir supplying water being located at a suitable level to allow it to flow slowly around the upper end of the base block and the blade blank while the latter is being ground. The yoke Z is adjustable vertically and this in connection with thecam gage enables the depth of the cut made by the grinding wheel to be accurately determined.

a vertical grinder spindle supported on an adjustable carriage, an annular grinder secured to the lower end of the spindle and overlying a bed plate or table, a reciprocating slide mounted on the bed plate, a knife holder attached to the slide and having a sidewise rocking play on the holder, a Vertically moving base block having its upper end adapted to support a knife blade, a lever pivotally supported on the bed with one end in engagement with the base block and the other provided with an adjustable weight, all substantially as described.
3. In a knife grinding machine, in combi nation with an annular grinder'having ahorizontally arranged grinding surface, a reciprocating slide mounted in operative relation to the grinding surface, a knife holder loosely attached to the slide wherebya sidewise rocking movement of the holder is -permitted,a vertically movable base block with its upper surface adapted to support theblade in opposition to the grinding surface, alever mounted on the frame with one end in engagement with the base block and the other bearing a .weight, an adjustable cam or guide attached to the said lever, and an adjustable yoke attached to the slide and having its cross-bar in contact with the lower edge of the guide borne on the machine, all substantially as,
described.
4. In a cutlery grinding machine, in combination with an annular grinder having a horizontally arranged grinding surface, a reciprocating slide supported on the frame, the vertically moving base block mounted in a socket in the frame,a knife holderloosely connected to the slide, means for-automatically reciprocating the slide, the lever forming ayielding support for the base block, and the fluid supply, all substantially as described.
5. In a cutlery grinder, in combination with an annular grinder, a reciprocating slide, means for automatically reciprocating the slide, a knife holder loosely connected to the slide at a point back of the knife blade clamp, the yielding base block that supports the blade in opposition to the grinding surface, and a lever to hold the yielding-base in operative relation to the grinder all substantially as described.
6. In a cutlery grinding machine, in combination with a grinder, a reciprocating knife holder having a knife clamp with a sidewise rocking play in its support, a yielding base block that supports the blade in the operation of grinding, and the pipe connection between the base block socket and a source of water supply, all substantially as described.
7. In a cutlery grinder, in combination with the grinding surface, a frame supporting a reciprocating slide, the reciprocating slide and means for automatically moving thesame, an adjustable yoke borne on the slide and engaging the lever, a lever mounted on the frame and bearing an adjustable gage or guide with its lower edge in contact with the yoke, and the lever having one end in engagement with a movable base block, and the movable base block supported in a socket in the frame and having its upper surface grooved or channeled in the direction of movement of the cutting surface, all substantially as described.
8. In a cutlery grinder, in combination with a base block having a knife blade holding socket in the upper part of the frame, a reciprocating slide mounted on the frame, means for reciprocating the slide, a knife holder loosely mounted on the slide by a bolt passing through a socket of larger diameter than the.
bolt in the outer end of the knife holder, the adjustable yoke borne on the slide and engaging the adjustable guide on the base block supporting lever, and the said lever having one end in engagement with the block and the other supporting an adjustable weight, all substantially as described.
9. In a cutlery grinder, in combination with the grinding surface, a reciprocating slide and means for automatically moving the same, a yoke borne on the slide and engaging a lever, the lever mounted on the frame and bearing an adjustable gage or guide in engagement with the yoke and having one end of the lever in engagement with a movable base block, and the movable base block supported in op-' position to the grinding surface, all substan 4o tially as described.
