' UNITED STATES PATENT OFF E.
THOMAS K. BROWNELL, on CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED BOOK A ND INDEX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 512,943, dated January 16, 1894. Application filed October 5, 1893. Serial No. 487,258. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS K. BROWNELL, of Clifton, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Oombined Book and Index, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a combined book and index, and the object of the invention is to so combine the index book with a book of entry, such as a ledger,'that the one is securely fastened to the other, so that the index book may be inclosed within the covers of the book of entry, and extended with it for ready reference.
The nature of my invention consists in the attachment of the index bookto the tapes of the main book, or book of entry, so that it is not liable to be detached except by the destruction of either or both. 7
Devices in extension indices have been heretofore made and patented, but the attachment has been made directly to the leaves,
covers, 850., all of which are insecure. As is well known injthe structure of books used for entries, or accounts, the binding tapes are the foundation of the binding, and to those I make my attachment of the index.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Fignrel is a perspective view of a book and index, with the latter partly extended. 7 Flg. 2 is an edge View of the book and index,,as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the bookand index, with the latter partly extended, illustrating a difierent manner of folding the index in the book; and Fig. 4 is an end view of the book and index, as constructed in Fig. 3. v
A, is the book of entry and B the index.
0 represents the binding tapes extended from the back of the book, and cl, indicates a sheet by means of which the connection is made between the entry and index books.
As illustrated in the drawings three of the binding tapes 0, are usually extended or carnor; or the binding tapes may be extended far enough to be attached firmly to the cover of the index and in alnanner to fold.
In the operation, the index while firmly attached to its bookof entry may be extended beyond the covers of the latter for ready reference, and be returned between said covers when not needed. I also usually provide a stub f in the binding to afford space between the cover and leaves'for the index. In Figs.
.1 and 2 the binding tapes are shown as being entirely free from engagement with the cover of the book of entry; and in this event the index book is folded in the book of entry between the binding tapes and the cover, while in Figs. 3 and 4., the binding tapes are illustrated as secured to the cover at a point in their length back of their attachment to the sheet 01. This attachment is made only in order that the index book may be folded over upon the tapes instead of beneath them, and the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is in many instances preferred. The attachment of the tapes to the cover is not made in the interest of strength, as the tapes are sufficiently strong of themselves, emanating as they do from the binding of the book.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, of a book of entry with its index, the connection being made between the binding tapes of one and the edge of the cover or outer' sheet of the other, substantially as described.
2. The combination, of a book of entry with its index, the connection being made between the binding tapes of the one and the edge of the cover or outer sheetof the other, by means of a. flexible sheet interposed between and the book of entry, the binding strips being se firmly attached to each,substantia1ly as shown cured at a point in their length to the cover to and described. of the book of entry, substantially as and for 3. The combination, of abook of entry with the purpose set forth. 5 its index, the connection being made between THOMAS K. BROWN ELL.
the binding of the book of entry and the edge Vitnesses: of the cover or outer sheet of the index, J. FRED. ACKER, through the medium of the binding tapes of E. M. CLARK.
