Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
LEE BIGGERS, OF PALMERSVILLE, TENNESSEE.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 510,767, dated December 12, 1893.
Application filed August 10, 1893. YSerial No. 482,829. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEE P. BIGGERS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Palmersville, in the county of Weakley and State of Tennessee, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to improvements in fences.
The object of the invention is to provide av fence which is simple in construction and cheap and durable, and will admit of adj ustment to inequalities of the ground; the construction being of such a character that the fence can be easily put up and readily taken apart.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is va perspective View of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention.. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the sills.
A designates one offthe panels of the fence which consists of an upright or post B the lower end of which is provided with a notch or recess b as shown. To this post the rails c are nailed or suitably attached at one end, and at the other end they are connected by a batten B which extends a short distance below the lower rail, the said extended portion being beveled'on its inner side.
D designates a sill piece which is provided on its upper side and near its center with notches or recesses d and d', said recesses lapping each other for a short distance and having `straight end walls which will bear against opposite sides of the postB when the notched end thereof is placed over the sill.
After the panels and sill pieces are con-' structed as hereinbefore described and put together a length of wire is wrapped around the post B and batten B so as to pass above and below the upper rail, the ends of said wire being then led to near the ends of the sill piece and fastened thereto; thus provid-` ing a brace for supporting the fence in an u pright position. further secured to each other by a wire loop e' which passes around the post and hatten 'will be at an angle with each other and in setting up or removing the fence it is only necessary to attachV the brace wires.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In'a fence, the combination of a sill having notches or recesses d and d which ylap and form straight shoulders out of line with each other, together with panels comprising post B notched at its lower end for engagement with the sill, a batten B the lower end of which is beveled and rails which are connected at each end by the post and batten, the panels being secured to each other by wire loops e and e and braced in an upright position by the wires f f, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In Va fence, the combination, of a sill having notches or recesses d and CZ', which lap and form straight shoulders which are out of line and on opposite sides of the center of the sill, of a post to` which the rails of the fence are attached at one end, said post having a notch b at its lower end,a batten B for connecting the other end of the rails to each other, together with loops e and c which embrace the post and batten of adjacent panels, substantially as shown, and forjthe purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
The panels of the fence arev
