UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUOIAN UPHAM, OF PAWTUOKET, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,86l, dated November 7, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUGIAN UPHAM, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings by the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a view of my invention as applied to a gate; and Fig. 2 shows the parts composing the hinge, the dotted lines showing the interior.
A, the pintle, is made with sloping` or spiral inelines O on its upper end, and the socket B, which turns on A, has a boss or projection, D, on its inside to rest on the inelines O, both A and B being provided with suitable flanges to secure them in place. The two inelines O on A adapt the hinge to swing both ways when desired, the boss D resting between them when at rest.
The operation is similar to other incline hinges. On opening the boss D rides up one of the inelines, raising B, sov that when left at liberty the weight causes it to slide down and close.
This construction and arrangement give the advantages ot' protection to the rubbing parts from the weather and other casualties, and presents a neat compact hinge not lia-ble to get out of order.
I am aware that incline planes have been used in hinges, in combination with springs and other devices. rlhese I do not claim; but
