TOBACCO CUTTING AND SIFTING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 506,117, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed June 7, 1893. Serial No. 476.818- (No model.) Patented in Mexico January 16, 1892.110. 224; in France February 12,1892, No. 217,376; in England April 14,1892, No. 7,257 in Germany April 15, 1892, No. 66.134; in Belgium April 30, 1892.110- 99,248; in Spain May 20. 1892, No. 13,190, andinPortngal July 6, 1892, No. 1,697.
To all whoin it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS OLAUDIUs J ossE- LIN, of Mexico, Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco Cutting and Sifting Machine, (for which Letters Patent have been obtained in Mexico, No. 224:, dated January 16, 1892; in Spain, No. 13,190, dated May 20, 1892; in Germany, No. 66,134,'dated April 15, 1892; in Portugal, No. 1,697, dated July 6, 1892;
'[O in Belgium, No. 99,248, dated April 30, 1892; in England, No. 7,257, dated April 14, 1892, and in France, No. 217,376, dated February 12, 1892,) of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of machines which arev adapted to cut and sift tobacco, and the object of my invention is to produce a machine of simple construction, which will rapidly cut the tobacco to any degree of fineness, and which will thoroughly sift the same.
To this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter de- 2 5 scribed and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
0 Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View, with the hopper and sieve removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section through the two cutters, with the hopper re- 3 moved. Fig. at is a detail longitudinal section of the exterior cutter; and Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal section of the interior cutter.
The machine is provided with a suitable frame 10, which has a hopper 11 at the top,
and the hopper is hinged to a cross bar 11,
which is supported above the frame so that the hopper may be easily tipped back out of the way when desired.
Mounted in the frame beneath the hopper,
5 are the cutters, comprising an exterior cutter 12 and an interior cutter 13, the exterior cutter consisting of two end pieces 14 having projecting hollow trunnions 15 and 16, the trunnion 16 being adapted to carry a driving pulley 16*, the cross knives 1?, connecting the outer edges of the two end pieces 14, and the hackles 18,'which project from the outer edges of the knives and which are adapted to rub the tobacco through the sieve 19', which sieve envelops the lower portion of the exterior cut- 5 5 for and is suitably secured in the frame. The
cutting edges of the knives 17 are on their inner sides, so that the tobacco will be out between them and the knives of the interior cutter 13. The interior cutter is secured to a shaft 20, which shaft projects through and turns in the hollow trunnions of the exterior cutter, and one end of the shaft is provided with tight and loose pulleys 21 and 22, and above the pulleys is a shipper 23, which is secured to the hopper 11. The interior cutter 13 comprises the radiating arms 24, which are secured to the shaft 20, the diagonally or spirally-arranged knives 25, and the supports 25 for the knives, which supports are secured to the outer ends of the cross arms. The diameter of the interior cutter is such that it will revolve within the exterior cutter, and the cutters are arranged in relation to each other so that the edges of the knives in the 7 5 two cutters will pass closely together, and the tobacco which is caught between them will be finely cut.
It is obvious that both the exterior and interior cutters may be provided with any desired number of knives, and the fineness of the tobacco will be governed by the number of knives and by the speed of the cutters.
To operate the machine, the exterior and interior cutters are revolved in opposite direc- 8 5 tions, and the tobacco is placed in the hopperand allowed to drop through upon the cutthe cutters, and this is the manner in which I prefer to use it; but it is obvious that the cutters may be charged from either side with the same effect.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A machine of the character described, comprising oppositely rotating exterior and interior cutters having adjacent knives, and a sieve exterior to the cutters to sift the cut material, substantially as described.
2. A machine of the character described, comprising a rcvoluble exterior cutter having cross knives with their edges arranged inwardly, a revoluble interior cutter having diagonally-arranged knives with the edges on the outer portions, and a sieve for the cutters, substantially as described.
3. A machine of the character described, comprising a revoluble exterior cutter having cross knives with their edges arranged inwardly, a revoluble interior cutter having diagonally-arranged knives with their edges on their outer portions, a sieve for the cutters, and hackles secured to the outer knives so as to contact with the sieve, substantially as described.
4. A machine of the character described, comprising a frame having a hopper thereon, an exterior cutter mounted beneath the hopper, said cutter havingaseries of cross knives with their edges pointing inward and having a suitable driving pulley, an interior cutter adapted to revolve independently of the exterior cutter and having a series of diagonallyarranged knives the edges of which point outward, and a sieve for the cutters, substantially as described.
5. In a machine of the character described, the combination, with the exterior cutter comprising end pieces having hollow trunnions, one of which is provided With a driving pul- 1ey,' and cross knives connecting the end pieces, of an interior cutter comprising a shaft extending through the hollow trunnions of the exterior cutter and provided with a driving pulley, cross arms carriedby the shaft, and knives arranged diagonally on the ends of the cross arms so as to pass adjacent to the knives of the exterior cutter, substantially as described.
