UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OWEN CORNELIUS JOYCE, OF EDLIL, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ALONZO W. NOBLES, OF SAME PLACE.
WHlFFLETREE- HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 504,925, dated September 12, 1893.
Application filed March 14, 1893- To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown thatI, OWEN CORNELIUS JOYCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Edlil, in the county of Lincoln and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletree-Hooks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in whiffletree hooks, the object being to provide an improved construction of the same, whereby a trace may be easily and readily connected with, and disconnected from the hook.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a whifiietree, showing my improved hook applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the hook detached, showing the same open. Fig. 3 is a similar View, showing the hook closed. Fig. 4c is a side elevation.
In the said drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a portion of an ordinary whiffletree, to the ends of which, the hooks are applied.
The numeral 2 denotes a metal block having a longitudinal bore or opening, forming a socket to receive the end of the whiflietree. This block is formed with a longitudinal extension 3, having at its inner end, lugs 4, in which is pivoted a shackle 5, the free end of which is provided with an eye 6, and is adapted to engage with an opening, 7, in the extension 3. This extension isalso provided with a longitudinal cylindrical recess or bore, in
Serial No.465,893. (No model.)
which is located a reciprocating rotatable bolt 8 adapted to pass through the eye in the shackle. Also located in this recess, at the inner end thereof, is a coiled spring 9, the tendency of which is to throw the bolt outward to engage with the eye in the shackle. At one side of the extension 3, is an opening 10, provided with a central lug 12. Through this opening projects a pin 13, secured to the bolt. This opening is provided with a housing 14. When the hook is closed the bolt is projected through the eye in the shackle, with the pin resting in the outer groove 15, between the lug and the opening 10. The lug holds the pin in place and'prevents the bolt from being withdrawn.
To unlock the hook, the pin 13 is thrown out of engagement with said groove and slid backward in the opening 10, until the opposite groove 16 is reached when it will engage therewith. By this means the bolt is disengaged from the shackle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a whiffiet-ree hook the combination with the block formed with a socket, an extension having a cylindrical bore, an opening to receive the end of ashackleand a side opening provided with a central lug, of the shackle pivoted to said extension having an eye at its free end, and a spring-actuated slidable and rotatable bolt provided with a projecting pin, and a housing surrounding the side opening in the extension, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OWEN CORNELIUS JOYCE.
