SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 500,689, dated uly 4., 1893-.

To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that we, JAMES W. MAHAEEEY, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming, and AQUILLA F. HALDEMAN, residing at Turbotville, in the county of Northumberland, State of Pennsylvania, citizens ot the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a [o full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part ot this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The present invention has for its object to provide a simple and practically operating jack for lifting or raising Vehicle bodies and for all purposes for which a device of this character is or may be found useful, and the invention consists in a jack constructed subzo stantially as shown in the drawing and hereinatter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing which represents a perspective view of the lifting jack constructed in accordance With our invention,

z5 A indicates two short standards and B similar standards but ot' somewhat greater height. These standards are suitably connected by bolts or otherwise to the sides of a support C and near the ends thereof, said standards being strengthened by an inclined brace D which extends between the standards and connected thereto in any suitable and well known manner. The standards B have pivoted between them the inner end of an operating lever II, said pivoted end being shown at E and is of such width as to allow room for the pivoting thereto of the links F. These links form an extension or continuation ofthe standards B when in an upright or vertical 4o position as shown in full lines in the drawing.

To the upper ends of the links F is pivoted one end of a notched bar G and the opposite end of said bar is in `like manner pivoted to the short standards A.

The upper ends of the standards B are inclined as shown at d and the lower ends of the links F are rounded as shown at b so as to allow the links to assume the position shown in dotted lines, when the lever is raised.

The standards A form guides for the end ot' 5o the notched bar G and when Weight of any object is supported thereby, the standards prevent any displacement of the notched bar by any lateral strain thereon.

The diagonal or inclined brace D serves the purpose of preventing the standards from spreading laterally in an outward direction.

When the lever I-I is depressed as shown in full lines, the links F are in an upright position and on line with the standards B, the in- 6a ner ends ot` the links and standards lbeing in contact, the ends of the standards forming supports for the ends of the links and thus taking the strain od the pivots of the lever. When the lever isin araised position as shown in dotted lines, the end of said lever will form a support for the notched bar G.

Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iso In a lifting-jack, the standards A B having inclined brace D connected thereto, in combination with the pivoted notched bar G, the links F pivoted thereto, and the lever I-I pivoted to the links and to the standards as shown, said standards and links having inclined and rounded ends respectively, the end of the lever when raised forming a support for the notched bar and when depressed the ends of the links coming in contact with the So ends of the standards, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
