Be it known that I, J osEPH L. MCKNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ingraham, in the county of Olay and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Hen7s Nest, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hens7 nests, and consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts w thereof as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. The object of the invention is to provide a device of this Character wherein the temperature or animal heat may be readily reduced r 5 to a minimum, and di'sinfectants placed therein to prevent and destroy vermin; the parts being simple and eifective in their construction and arrangement and cheaply manufactured and sold.

Referrin g to the drawings, A designates the im proved nest, having front and back Walls a, side walls a', and a cover' B. These walls are made of a suitable depth, and secured to the 3a inner surfaces of the side walls a' are battens O', to which is attached a screen partition O. The lower part of said side walls a' has cleats D' secured thereto to support a drawer D, which is located below said screen partition C, and may be readily withdrawn from and pushed into the nest. The front and back walls a of the said nest are formed with slots or openings E, which are so located as to be between the front and rear edges of the ends 40 of said drawer, and cut-away portions of said walls a, to thereby provide air-ingress Openings or slots. The drawer D is formed with inclined walls D2 to thereby direct that which may be placed therein toward the center thereof, and avoid running over the edges of the same.

The hen, when sitting, rests on the screen partition C, and by means of the air-ingress openings heretofore set forth the animal heat is reduced, and in hatching prevents the egg from becoming too hot, and also relieves the hen from suffering from heat as is often the case. By placing a suitable disinfecting compound within the drawer D, the fumes thereof may readily pass up through the screen partition O, and keep the hen healthy and at the same time destroy vermin and avoid the same. Further, if the egg should break, the contents thereof would pass through said screen partition into the saiddrawerD, and bad odol's arising therefrom will be neutralized by the disinfectant contained within the said drawer D. In this device, also, danger of killing the young brood in the egg, before they i are hatched by thunder or similar atmospheric influences is avoided.` It will be understood that the nest may be used equally well for geese, ducks, and other fowl.

Having thus (lescribed my invention, What is claimed as new is- A hen,s nest, consisting of asquare box having a removable top cover and of a size to ac'- commodate one hen only, battens or strips C' secured against the sides of the box above the bottom of the same, a screen partition attached r to the under sides of said battens or strips and to the sides of the box, and` a removable drawer mounted in the bottom of the said box and having inwardly-sloping sides, the front and back walls or sides at the lower portion of the box being forined with slots or openings E extending across the box from one end to the other, and the frontopening also forming means for insertingthe drawer and withdrawing the same, the said openings extending slightly above the plane of the upper termination of the said drawer when the latter is closed for the purpose of ventilation, the said openings being increased in size by slightly withdrawing the drawer in order to increase the amount of ventilation, substantially as described.
