L. AUER SHIRT.
No. 487,000. Patented Nov. 29, 1892.
WITNESSES JNVENTOR a; fiflmfi LouisAuer, I
. 1 ATTORNEY UNITED STATES.
= PATENT OFFICE.
7 LOUIS AUER, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,000, dated November 29, 1892.
Application filed April 13, 1892.
Serial No. 428,941. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LoUIs AUER, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mens Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mens shirts; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of shirt-body and detachable shirt-bosom hereinafter fully specified, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to afford facilities for presenting a clean shirt-bosom after the soil of traveling without the necessity of changing the shirt, and I attain this object by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, being herein referred to, form part of this specification.
In said drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of the parts of a shirt which are affected by my invention, the detachable bosom being fixed in place on the body of the shirt. Fig. 2 is a frontelevation of the detachable bosom shown in Fig. 1 detached from the body of the shirt. modified form of the body of the shirt with the detachable bosom removed therefrom, and Fig. .4 is a rear elevation of a detachable bosom adapted to use with the modified form of shirt-body shown in Fig. 3.
Heretofore detachable shirtbosoms or dickeys have been made to tie on; but in such cases the tie-strings have bound down the body of the shirt to the body of the wearer, so that when said body of the shirt became displaced by wear the tie-strings would prevent the shirt-body and detachable bosom from resuming their proper positions, and thereby the shirt-bosom would quickly present an untidy appearance. That defect is remedied in my invention, for the reason that the detachable bosom and shirt-body are connected together in such manner that the latter is left free to fall into its natural position on the body of the wearer. Another well-known method of attaching removable bosoms to shirts has been to secure the same by means of buttons and buttonholes or by registering button-holes in the shirt and bosom and studs through the same; but this method has been accompanied by the disadvantage Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a tended to overcome both of these defects,
and it possesses the further advantage of being placed in position with far greater ease and rapidity than has been the case with any detachable bosom hitherto devised, so far as I know.
As represented in the drawings, A designates the shirt-body in Fig. 1; but in Fig. 3 said shirt-body is designated as A. In Fig. 1 the shirt-body A is provided with two lateral slits 1, which extend from each side of a neckband B, of the usual form, saidslits being made to extend radially from about the center of the neck-opening Oof said shirtbody, and they are for a purpose hereinafter explained. A pair of vertical straps 2 are spaced equidistant from the center line of the front of said shirt-body and at any suitable distance below the slits l. Said straps aresecured to the shirt-body by stitches 3 at each end, so as to leave an unobstructed opening between the inner face of each strap and the outer face of the front of the shirt-body. The space between the straps2 will be determined by the width of the detachable bosom,'said space being required to be a little greater than the width of said bosom. A cross-strap 4 is attached in a central position to the front of the shirt-body and at such distance below the neckband as may suit the conformation of the detachable bosom. The ends of strap 4 are secured by stitches 5, so as to leave an unobstructed opening bet-ween the inner face of said strap and the outer face of the front of said shirt-body.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, D designates a detachable bosom fitted to be attached to the shirt-body A. The upper end of said detachable bosom is cut out, as at 6 on Fig. 2, for the purpose of spanning around the front part of the'neckband B, and thereby points 7 are formed to enter the slits 1 of the shirtbody for the purpose of maintaining the upper end of the detachable bosom in its proper place. At each edge of said detachable bosom there is formed a tab or tongue 8, fitted to enter underneath the straps 2 for the purpose of holding the detachable bosom in contact with the front of the shirt-body and at the same time holding said detachable bosom in its proper place sidewise. The lower part of the detachable bosom is narrowed, as at 9, to enter between the strap 4 and the body A for the purpose of holding that part of said bosom in its proper place on the shirt-body A.
As shown in Fig. 3,the shirt-body A is provided with two lateral slits 10, located in the same places and for the same purpose as the slits 1. (Shown in Fig. 1.) Equidistant from the center line of the body there are two vertical slits 11, which are arranged in such position as to be fairly covered by the detachable bosom. Preferably the slits and 11 are covered on the inner side of the shirt-body A by a reinforcement or lining 12, (shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3,) so as to form pockets, of which the slits l0 and 11 are the pocket-holes. A cross-strap 13, like the strap 4 shown in Fig. 1, is attached to the front part of the shirt-body A'for thepurpose of receiving the lower end of a detachable bosom. Said strap is located in substantially the same position and secured in the same manner as above described in relation to the strap 4. (Shown in Fig. 1.)
D designates a detachable bosom adapted to use on the shirt-body A. The upper and lower ends of said bosom are made substantially the same as the one shown in Fig. 2. The points 14 are fitted to engage in the slits 10, and the narrowed lower end 15 is fitted to engage between the strap 13 and the front of the shirt-body A. On the rearmost face of the detachable bosom D there is secured a pair of tabs or tongues 16, which are fixed in position to enter the slits 11 and retain said bosom in place on the shirt-bodyA', and when said bosom is fixed in position on said shirtbody the side edges of the detachable bosom will overlap the slits 11 and conceal them from sight. When the reinforcements 12 are applied to the shirt-body, the points 14 and tabs 16 will thereby be covered in such manner that they cannot produce an annoying irritation to the chest of a person wearing the shirt.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a shirt-body having .a lateral slit at each side of the neckband, vertical straps 2 at opposite sides of the bosom-seat, and a transverse strap 4 near the 1 lower end of said bosom-seat, of a detachable bosom D, having its upper end hollowed out, i as at 6, to span the front part of the neck- 1 band B and to form points 7, adapted to enter the lateral slits 1, tabs or tongues 8, formed at the opposite edges of said bosom and fitted to engage with the vertical straps 2, and a a narrowed lower end 9 of said bosom fitted to engage with the transverse strap4of the shirt-body, substantially as and for the pur- I pose herein specified.
LOUIS AUER.
