Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SAMPSON, OF MANCHESTER, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF OIL-CLOTH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,314, dated June 20, 1865.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE SAMPsoN, of Manchester, county of Kennebec, and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Manufacturing Painted Floor-Cloths, or compositions used therefor;
- and I do hereby declare that the ingredients or substances used in making said composition and the process of mixing or compounding them,with the mode of using said composition, aredescribed in thefollowingspecification, so as to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use said composition without further invention or experiment.
The nature of my invention and improvements in the m an ufacture of printed floor-cloths consists in filling the interstices in the cloth and leveling up its surface, preparatory to paint in g,with a composition of glue, gum, or vegetable sizing, thickened with clay, Whiting, ocher, or other earths; also, in mixing clay largely .with the oil-paint for coating or painting cloths in the manufacture of painted floor-cloths.
l The mode now generally practiced in making painted floor-cloths is to first size the cloth with a thin sizing of glue, or of glue and wheat ing a composition of glue, gum, or vegetable size thickened stiff with clay, whiting, ocher,
or other earths, and filling the interstices of the sized cloth with this composition, so as to level up the surface of the cloth so that it will require far less painting to prepare it for printing. After coating the cloth on both sides with this composition 1 shave ofl' the knots or protuberances with a knife and rub the surface with pumice-stone to render it smooth to receive the paint to prepare the cloth for printing. I also mix from thirty to fifty per cent. of clay with the paint for painting floor-cloths.
By these improvements I save from thirty to fifty per' cent. of the paint heretofore used l in preparing floor-cloths for printing, and make a far cheaper and firmer cloth.
The blue clay which I have used is found in Kennebec county, State of Maine, and I propose to use clay of other colors and from such localities as it may be found that will answer the purpose.
What I claim as my invention and improvement in the manufactureof painted floor-cloths 1. Acomposition made of glue, gum, or vegetable sizing,thickened Withclay,whiting,ocher, or other earths, for filling or leveling up the. surface of the cloth to prepare it for painting or printing.
2. Mixing clay largely with the oil-paint for coating or painting cloths in the manufacture of painted floor-cloths.
GEORGE SAMPSON.
