SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,008,
dated May 17, 1892.

.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM C. BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county. of New- Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cartridges, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a cartridge-shell and a chambered block which interlocks with the flange and wall of said shell, said block being compressed in the operation of forming the chamber therein, whereby it is forced against the shell, which action, with the interlocking features, prevents the block from being blown out of the shell.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a block for the interior of a cartridge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a section of the shell and block in partly-finished condition. Fig. -i represents a section of the completed shell and block. .Fig. 5 represents a front end view of thebiock as removed from the shell.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a cartridge-shell formed of themain section A and the breech-section A and i3 designates the breech-block therein, said block being primarily formed of wood, a coil or'roll of paper, or other material, as seen in Fig. 1,
with a convex conical chamber C in the front end thereof and a vent D rearward therefrom for the passage of the tire to the explosive. On the rear end of the block is a flange E, which enters the flange F of the shell, thus interlocking the block with the shell and preventing said block from being blown out of the shell. The periphery of the block and the contiguous portion of the shell are threaded or corrugated, as at G 1 thus interlocking the block with the shell and providing an additional fastening for said block.
II designates the pnimer-plug, the same being embedded in the block and formed of hard material, with a threaded or corrugated periphery .I,- t-he latter meshing or interlocking with the inner peripher of the block, thus A is placed on the section A, and the block as primarily'formed is fitted into a shell, the rear portion of the blockbeing untlanged, as
shown in Fig. The shell is then placed in a proper die or apparatus and a proper implement inserted into the shell and driven or forced into the block, thus forming the chamberC. Meanwhile the die is manipulated so as to produce, while the block is subjected to the chamber-forming operation, the flange F on the shell and the flange E on the block, the latter entering the former and also the corrugations G G, thus firmly connecting the block with the shell, it being also seen that the block is compressed and rendered dense and expanded, so as to be forcibly driven against the inner faces of the sections of the shell, thus more. firmly uniting the two. sec-.
tions and causing the holding action of the block on the shell to be increased, the shell thus being reliable in service and light in nature. As the primer-plug isinterlocked-with the block, as has been stated, it being also somewhat of the form of two hemispherical pieces joined so as to leave between them the neck J, into which the material of the block enters, th us providing additionalseeurity for the connection of theplug with the block, and affords a solid support for the primer or cap.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cartridge having a shell consisting of a main and a breechsection, the latter being provided with a flanged rim, a block in said breech-section-having a conical chamber in.
