HUGO F. LOEPERE, OF BUFFALO, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ZELMIR L. H. LOEPERE, OF SAME PLACE.
F U lVl I'G AT O R.
SPECIFICATION forming' part Of Letters Patent No. 473,631, dated April 26, 1892. Application iiled March 19, 1891. Serial No. 385,635. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO F. LOEPERE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Fumigating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device which is more particularly designed for fumigating ro potted plants, but which may be used for fumigating other articles.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive fumigating apparatus for domestic and other purposes, by which the fumes are conducted to the plants in a very efficient manner, and which can be readily converted intoatable when not in use and which can be compactly folded for transportation.
zo In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved fumigating apparatus, showing the cover partlyfolded back to expose the interior. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section showing the parts in z 5 position for use. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the cover-frame depressed and the apparatus converted into a table.
Like letters of reference refer tolike parts in the several figures.
3o A represents the openV rectangular main frame, composed of four side boards c and corner-blocks B, secured in the inside corners of the main frame.
C represents the legs which support the V3, 5 main frame. Each of these legs is provided at its upper end with an externally-screwtlireaded portion d, which engages in a screwthreaded socket e, formed in the lower end of the corner-block B.
D represents a grating secured horizontally inside of the main frame for supporting the iiowers, plants, or other articles to be fumigated. This grating consists, preferably, of wire-cloth of coarse mesh and is secured to the main frame near the lower edge thereof in any suitable manner.
F represents a skeleton frame, which supports a flexible cover f. This cover-frame F consists, preferably, of four bars or rods g, connected at their ends and forming a rectangular frame of about the same size as the main frame.
represents upright rods, which support the frame F. These rods are arranged to slide vertically with their lower portions in a passage fr', formed in each of the blocks and the leg attached thereto. The upper end of each sliding rod h is provided with an eye t", by which it is pi votally attached to one of the rods of the cover-frame F. The latter can 6o be adjusted vertically to suit the height of the plants or other articles to be fuinigated by sliding the rods 7i in the openings fi. After the frame has been adjusted it is secured in place by thumb-screws j, arranged in the corner-blocks and bearing against the supporting-rods. The flexible cover f extends over the skeleton frame F and hangs with its end and side portions along the four sides ot' the main frame, thereby forming with the 7o main frame a fuinigating-charnber having a closed top and sides and an open bottom.
K represents a fumigating pot or stove in which fumes of tobacco or some other fumigant are generated. This fumigating-pot is placed underneath the grating of the fumigating-chamber, so that the rising fumes will come in contact with the plants or other articles to be fumigated.
In fumigating plants or flowers, as hereto- 8c fore practiced, the fumes approached the plants from 'the top and the insects on the plants would seek refuge in the crevices on the under side of the leaves, which form small air-pockets into which the fumes do not enter. 8 5 By constructing the fumigator so that fumes approach the plants from below the rising fumes corne first in contact with the under sides of the leaves and flowers, which causes the insects to seek refuge on the upper side of 9o Y the leaves and flowers; but the fumes in continuing to rise soon envelop the entire plant and Vdestroyl the insects.
Vhen the fumigator is not in use, it can be readily converted into a table by folding the flexible covering and placing it upon the grate, lowering the cover-frame so that it rests upon the corner-blocks, and placing a table-top L upon the main frame, as represented in Fig. 3. This table-top may be provided with cleats roo Z, which t against the sides and ends of the main frame and hold the table-top against displacement on the latter, Whereby the fumigator can be utilized as an ordinary table.
When it is desired to ship the fumigator, the sliding rods of the cover-frame are removed from the hollow legs and folded against the side bars of the supporting-frame, While the legs are detached from their sockets and placed upon the grating on the inside of the main frame, thereby packing the parts compactly and permitting the apparatus to be conveniently transported.
I claim as my inventionl. The combination, with the main frame and the grating arranged in said frame, of a cover-supporting frame arranged on the main frame, and a iexible cover inclosing the top and sides of said frames and forming a fumigating-chamber having an open bottom, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the main frame and the grating arranged in said frame, of a cover-supporting frame made vertically adjustable on the main frame, and a flexible cover extending across the top and sides of the cover-frame7 substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, With the main frame and the grating arranged in said frame, of a horizontal cover-supporting frame having vertical rods adjustably arranged in lthe main frame, and a flexible cover resting on said supporting-frame, substantially as set forth.
4. The combinatfon, with the main frame and the grating arranged in said frame, of a horizontal cover-supporting frame, Vertical rods pivoted with their upper ends to the supporting-frame and adj ustably arranged With their lower ends in the main frame, and a flexible cover resting on vthe supporting-frame, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, With the main frame and the grating' arranged in said frame, of a horizontal cover-supporting frame, blocks secured to the inner side of the main frame and provided with screw-threaded sockets, legs provided with screw-threaded 'ends engagingin said sockets, vertical rods pivotally secured with -their upper ends tothe supporting-frame and adj ustably arranged With their lower ends in the openings in the blocks and legs, thumb-screws arranged in said blocks and bearing against the vertical rods, and a flexible cover resting upon the supportingframe, substantially as set forth. Witness my hand this 13th day of March, 1891.
HUGO F. LOEPERE.
