CHARLES A. LEE, OF HERKIMER, NEV YORK.
FOOT-REST.
Application filed March 23, 1891. Serial No. 386.165. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
`Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LEE, of Herkimer,in the county of Herkim er and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests; and I do herebydeclare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in foot rests, and more particularly to thoseadapted to use with platform-rockers.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification, and in which similar numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a side View of my foot-rest in connection with a platform rockingchair. Fig. 2 shows the foot-rest fully extended in connection with the -platforin of the chair. Fig. 3 shows a top view of the foot-rest extended and the platform. Fig. 4 shows the same parts folded. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 show details of the mechanism of the foot-rest.
Referring more specifically to the referencenumerals marked on the drawings, l indicates the platform rocking-chair mounted on platform 2 in the usual manner. Extending from front to back in the center of the platform and secured therein is rod or way 3, on which runs eye 4, connected with the foot-rest frame 5. Foot-rest frame 5 may iest and run on round 6 of the platform, and is supported at its forward or projecting end by legs' 7. Pivoted at 8 in the foot-rest frame 5, on either side, is a pair of arms 9. To the free ends of the arms 9are pivoted at 10 arms 11, to the free end of which arms 11 is hinged at 13 foot-rest cushion 12in such manner that it will swing with reference to the arm from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that shown in Figs. 4 or 7. The free ends of arms 9 9 are connected by a cross-bar 14. To the under side of the arms 9 9 is secured by clasps 15 15 an adjustable supporter 16, having ratcheted arms 17. The ratchet-teeth of arms 17 areadapted to engage on pins 18, secured in the frame 5. Spanning the corner of the frame 5 are supporting-braces 19, adapted to support the free ends of swinging arms 9 9 when in their lower position, together with the several connecting parts. The cushionstool is of a length greater than the Width of frame 5, so that when in its folded position it will engage on and be supported by the side rails of frame 5.
The foot-rest may be folded and slid out of the way beneath the seat of the chair, as shown in Fig. 4, and when in use maybe Withdrawn until the eye 4 engages against the front round of the platform, and the cushion-stool may be used immediately in front of the chair in the position shown in Fig. 7, or partially extended, as shown in Fig. 1,0r fully extended,as shown in Fig. 2.
In the position shown in Figs. 2 and 6 th stool 12 is supported by arms 11 engaging against cross-piece 1 4, and the height of the stool 12 may be regulated by engaging the ratcheted arms 17 of the supporter 16 W1tli iixed pin 18. In the folded position the free ends of the arms 9 are supported upon braces 19 19, and the supporting-arms 16 are also supported or held up close to the under side of arms 9 by resting on the braces 19, the rest being connected by the eye 4to the rod Stof the platform, and the eye 4, beinglarge 1n size with reference to rod 3, permits the foot-rest to be swung to either side, so that anper'son could readily get into or out of the chair without inconvenience from the foot-rest or footrest frame. It will also be observed that the cushion-stool 12 might be used supported o n the arms 9 and while in their elevated `position, which brings the stool closer to the front of the chair and gives numerous adJustments of the foot-rest stool to the chair.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the platform 2 of a rocker having a single central rod 3 extending from front to rear of platform, of afootrest frame 5, connected to the rod 3 by eye 4 and supported thereon and on round 6 at its rear end and supported at its front end by legs, swinging arms 9, pivoted at their inner ends to the frame 5 and having a cross-bar 14 at their outer ends, arms 11, pivoted to the swinging ends of the arms 9 and adapted to turn on their pivots so that the arm 11 engages against the cross-bar 14, supporting the arm 1l in an upright position, the y stool or IOO cushion 12, hinged at 13 to the free ends ofthe arms 11 to swing from ahorizontal folded position on the frame 5 to its open position supported on the ends of arm 11, and an adjustable supporter 16 for the arms 9,substantially as set forth.
2. The oo1nbination,with the platform 2 of a rocker having a single central rod 3 extending from frontto rear of platform, of a footrest frame 5, connected to the rod 3 by eye 4 and supported at its front end by legs and having braces 19 spanning the outer corners of the frame and being at the lower side of the frame to act as supports, swinging arms 9, pivoted. at their inner ends to the frame 5 and having a cross-bar 14 at their outer ends, arms 11, pivoted to the free end of the arms 9 and adapted to turn on their pivots so that the arm 11 engages against the cross-bar 14, supporting the arms in upright position, the stool or cushion 12, hinged at 13 to the free end of the arms 11, and an adjustable supporter 16 for the arms 9, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
