Description

UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND IMIIORST, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVED LAMP-CHIMNEY CLEANER.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 45.500, dated December 20, 1864.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND IMHoRs'r, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Lamp- Uhimney Cleaner; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, ieference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part ot this specication, said drawing representing a sectional side elevation of my invention, showing its application to a lamp-chimney.
This invention consists in the application of two pads attached to the ends ot' two levers, which are of unequal length and connected together in the manner of shears, in such a manner that when those ends of said levers which carry the pads are closed they can readily be introduced into a lampchimney, and by pressing on the rearends of the levers the pads are pressed against the inner surface ot' said chimney, and by turning the levers or chimney, or both, in opposite directions, the pad at the long lever cleans the top and the pad at the end ofthe short lever the bulb of the chimney in an easy and perfect' manner.
A B represent two pads, which are made of leather, felt, cloth, or other suitable sott and elastic fabric or material. The pad A is cylind rical, or nearly so, and secured to the end ot' the long lever A', and the pad B is made in the form ot' a semi-ellipsoid, or of a pear cut in two halves, and attached to the short lever B. The two levers are made of wood or any other suitable material, and each of them is provided with a projecting edge, a b, as clearly shown in the drawing.
A stud, c, inserted in the projecting edge of the lever A and passing through a conical hole in the lever B, connects the two levers and the two projecting edges from the fnlcrum on which they work when they are opened or closed. 'An additional stud, d, rising from the lever A' and projecting in a cavity in the lever B, keeps the two in the proper relative position and prevents the lever B from turning on the stud c, and a spring, c, which is interposed between the rear ends or handles of the levers, has a tendency to close up the pads.
It is obvious, however, that the two levers might be connected in various dii'erent ways so as lto open and close in the manner above described. They might be hinged together or connected by a loop or staple, or by other similar means, without altering the result, and I do not wish to confine myself to any one precise method of connecting the same, but reserve the right to connect them as I may think best.
The lever A extends beyond the end ot' the lever B, so that the pad B terminates below or inside of the pad A, as clearly shown in the drawing.
When the pads are closed up, they can be readily introduced into a lamp-chimney, and by pressing the rear ends ot' the levers to gether the pads are pressed against the inner surface of the chimney, and by turning the chimney or the levers, or both, in opposite directions the pad A cleans the top or upper end and t-he pad B the bulb ot the chimney.
The convenience ot' this device is apparent and requires no further explanation.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent- A lamp-chimney cleaner with two pads, A B, applied to the ends of two levers, Al B'-, of unequal lengths and hinged together, sub stantially in the manner herein shown and described.
FERDINAND IMHORST.
