Description

W. W. LAPHAM.
Churn.
Patented Oct. -18, 1864.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM IV. LAPHAM, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVED CHUPtN.
Specification forming part ofLettels Patent No. 14.732, dated October 18, 1864.
To all 1071/0772/ t may concern,.-
Be it known that l, WILLTAM W. LAPHAM, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Churn; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciication, in which- Figure l represents a vertical central secti )n of my invention, the line x fr, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view ofthe same, a portion of the cover havin g been removed to expose thc interior. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of one tt the flashers.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of churns in which two oscillating dashers are used to which a reciprocating motion is imparted in opposite directions ly the action of a double crankshaft.
A represents a tub, made of wood or any other suitable material, in the usual or in any convenient form or shape. A vertical central partition, B, divides this tub in two compartments, which communicate freely with each 'other through holes et in said partition.
C is a cover, which is titted in the top of the tub A, and which is made in sections, so that a portion of the same can be taken out iu order to obtain access to the interior ofthe tub. From the fixed portion of the cover rises a block, b, which supports a frame or standard, c, and said frame forms the bearings for the arbors d e, by means of which motion is imparted to the dashers D. The arbor d bears a large cogwheel,f, which gears in a pinion, h, on the shaft e, and this shaft is provided with two cranks, t, which stand in opposite directions, and from the wrist-pins of which the staffs j of the dashers are suspend` ed, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A winch, k, secured to one end of the arbor d, serves to impart motion to the entire mechanism, and as the shaft e rotates the dashers assume a reciprocating circular motion, whereby a violent motion is imparted to the cream, and the formation of butter is considerably facilitated.
rlhe staffs j of the dasher are guided by holes l in the cover, and they are attached to wristpins of the cranks in such a manner that they can be easily removed whenever it may be desirable.
In order to facilitate the operation ot' cleaning the tub, the central partition B is inserted into the tub so that it can be readily takenv out.
The dashers consist of a horizontal perforated plate, m, which is fastened to the bottom end of the staff, and of a vertical paddle, n, secured to the stati" and plate, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The paddles n are about half as wide as the plates m, and secured in their middle, and they are solid or not perforated with holes.
By the combined action of the paddles and plates the motion of the cream in the tub is increased and the formation of the butter facilitated.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The paddle n and plate m, combined with a suitable staff, j, to form a dasher of superior efcacy, as specified.
2. Ine arrangement and combination of the movable partition B, cover (l, tub A, removable dasher-staffs), double crank-shaft c, and gear-whexls f h, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
WM. WV. LAPHAM.
