ICE-CREAM FREEZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 44.2,316,dat2d December 9, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that we, JOHN \V. llART and LUcIUs GILLIHAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Iola, in the county of Allen and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Ice-Cream Freezer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to ice-cream freezers; and the objects in view are to facilitate freezing the cream, to accomplish the same in a short period of time, and in quantities desired.
Vv'ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of an ice cream freezer constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the lid opened. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section; Fig. 4, a plan, the cylinder removed; Fig. 5, a detail in perspective of the scraper; Fig. (5, a transverse section of the freezing-cylimler.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates an oblong box longitudinally divided to form a cover 2, hinged to the box, as at 3, said cover and box having double walls forming a space provided with suitable packings. The box is supported upon legs l, which are provided with opposite notches 5 for the reception of a sliding shelf (3, which shelf is provided at its rear end with a vertical Wall 7, having a dovetailed recess 8 in its upper edge adapted to receive a supportingbar 9, connecting the front and rear legs. The front end of the box is provided with an opening 10, in which is fitted a door 11, hinged at its upper edge to the box, as at 13, and provided with a spring-catch 14 for engagement with a keeper upon the box. llooks 16 are also secured to the front end of the box and are designed to engage eyes 17, secured to the front edge of the lid or cover, whereby the latter is maintained firmly upon the former. In the bottom of the box there is movably mounted a pan or receptacle 18, the bottom 19 of which is curved concentric with a pair of bearings 20, formed in the upper edges of the longitudinal sides of the box, which bearings correspond with similar halfbearings 21, formed in the lower edges of the longitudinal sides of the cover.
Between the opening in the front end of the box and the adjacent end of the receptacle is located an inclined shelf 23, and above the shelf and over the opening there is secured to the end wall of the box a spring-wire bail 2i. This bail is bent to form a transverse bar25, and its terminals are then coiled, as at 26, to lend resiliency and are disposed at a right angle to the central or bent portion and inserted in or secured to the wall of the box.

At each side of the feedpipe, upon spring-arms 29, are secured rubber or other soft wiping-pads or scrapers 30.
iii designates the freezing-cylinder, which is provided with double end walls 32, forming a space for the reception of the packing One end of the cylinder is provided with a collar 3i, which forms a bearing for the cylinder and acts as an opening for the introduction of the salt and ice. The outercnd of the collar has threaded thereon a cap The opposite head of the cylinder has secured thereto a spider 37, from which there extends a bearing-shaft. 38, taking into the opposite bearin g of the box and cover. he shaft carries outside of the box a gear-wheel 39, which is driven by a small pinion 5L0, mounted upon a stubshaft 41, extending from a plate 42, secured to the outer side or exterior of the cover. and from said pinion there extends or radiates a crank-handle 43. The interior of the cylinder is provided at intervals with perforated shelves it, so that as the cylinder is turned the ice is carried by said shelves to a point opposite the vertical diameter of the same before being let fall to plunge through the water at the bottom of the cylinder to the opposite side of the same, so that a thorough agitation of the ice and a consequent cooling of the water is carried on. By reason of the perforations the ice is strained of water.
41W designates a scraper, the opposite sides of which are struck up to form flanges 45, which flanges terminate in hooks 16, located at theupper ends of the same. The upper end of the scraper is by means of the hooks adapted for engagement with the cross-bar of the bail heretofore mentioned, and is of a Width agreeing with the distance between the two inner Walls of the freezing-cylinder, while the lower end of said scraper is gradually reduced and passed through the small door at the front end of the box. By means of the spring-bail the upper end of the scraper is snugly pressed against the periphery of the freezing-cylinder.
In operation the freezing-cylinder is first filled with crushed ice and the usual accompaniment-saltafter which the cap of the cylinder is placed in position and the cylinder mountedinthebox. 'lhecoverbeingclosedand locked,themachineisreadyforoperat-ion. The shelf under the box is drawn out and a saucer or other receptacle is placed upon the grating 47, located over a waste-pan 48, seated in anopening formed in the shelf. A desired quantity of the prepared cream is poured into the funnel, after which the same is closed by a cap 49 and the cylinderturned. The cylinder being cold, the cream adjacent to its periphery between the inner walls or ends thereof is congealed and adheres to the periphery, and is carried by the cylinder to the point of contact thereof with the scraper, by which the cream is scraped and guided down the scraper out from the freezer into the saucer. That portion of the cream partially congealed and adhering to the cylinder opposite the packing between its heads is wiped from the 'cylinderand drops back into the pan. The operation may be continued as long as desired or until a sufficient quantity of the cream has been frozen, after which the hooks of the scraper may be disconnected and the scraper drawn up and rested upon a lug or screw at the bottom of the opening in the front end of the box, and the small door closed over the opening to prevent the entrance of air and a wasting of the ice by a raising of the temperature within the box.
From the above it will be seen that the cream maybe frozen in desired quantities,thus effecting a saving and incurring no waste; also that it saves the frequent opening of the freezer for dispensing cream and the constant exposure of the ice or cooling agent.
Having described our invention, what we claim is 1. The combination, with the box having an opening and a cylinder revolubly mounted in the box in rear of the opening, and an inverted substantially U-shaped spring-wire bail secured to the box above the opening, of a scraper provided with hooks at its upper end for removably engaging the bail and pressed by the latter upon the cylinder, the lower end of the scraper extending through and terminating outside of the opening, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the box having the opening, and the revoluble cylinder mounted in rear of the opening and having opposite spring-coils, of the scraper provided with opposite flanges terminating in hooks for removably engaging said bail and pressed by the latter against the cylinder, a set-screw mounted in the lower end of the opening and adapted to support the scraper when the latter is elevated, and a hinged door provided with a fastening mounted over the opening, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the box, the pan therein, andthe eylinderprovided with double ends suitably packed, of the opposite Wipers yieldingly pressed against the periphery of the cylinder against the packed ends thereof, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the box, its front legs having notches, and the longitudinal bar oppositely beveled, of the sliding shelf mounted in the notches and provided at its rear end with a vertical wall having a dove- V tailed recess to receive the bar, substantially as specified.
5. The combination, with the box provided with ways, of the sliding shelf located therein and provided with an opening, a drippan mounted in the opening, and a grating mounted over the drip-pan, substantially as specified.
