L. DAHLSTROM.-
VALVE MECHANISM FOR DOUBLE ACTING PUMPS.
WITWESSES f @q faQ/@ UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEOPOLD DAHLSTROM, OF SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OE ONE- IIALF TO ROBERT MENZEL, OE SAME PLACE.
VALVE MECHANISIVI FOR DOUBLE-ACTING PUMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,480, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed July 8, 1890. Serial No. 358,062. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.
Beit known that I, LEOPOLD DAHLsrEoM, a citizen of the U'nited States, residing at Santa Clara, in the countyof Santa Clara andSt-ate of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Mechanism for Double-Acting Pumps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth- Io ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 ot the drawings is a representation of my device in elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 4 is a detail view.
The invention relates to improvements in valve mechanism for double-acting pumps; and it consists in the novel construction described in the following specilication, and
illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, A represents the valveboX and water-chambers, which are formed integral with or secured to the cylinder B, and consist ot the upper section a and lower section b, secured. together by suitable bolts. This box or chamber has communication. with each end of the pump-cylinder B by means of the passages G and C.
D represents the supply inlet or opening leading into the chamber D', and E the discharge leading from the outlet-chamber E', each of said openings being provided with a screw-thread to form suitable couplings.
The chamber D is partially divided into two compartments or chambers d and d by the ridge or projection f of the box or case,
4o each of these compartments or chambers having an upwardly-extending passage g g leading, respectively, into the chambers or passages C and C. In each of these upwardlyextending passages is seated a puppet-valve II H', consisting of the annular flanged central portion, the laterally-flanged downwardly-extended portion h h', and the upwardlyextending lug h2.
The water-chamber E, located in the upper 5o section of the box or case,is partially divided into two compartments or chambers K K by means of the projecting ridge 7e of the box, and are provided with the downwardly-extending passages fiz", respectively, communieating with the chambers C C', respectively. 55 The passages AL' i are through the hollow thimbles formed on the upper section, which extend down into the passages C C, as shown, said thimbles also serving to unite the sections firmly together. Centrally of these com- 6o partments K K and communicating with each is the outlet E, hereinbefore referred to.
The passages i i', which connect the cham` bers C C with chambers K K are respectively provided with puppet-valves LL, which consist of the central annular hanged portion, the downwardly-entending lugs Z Z', and the upwardly-extending lugs mm, provided each with vertical bore or slot which receive the downwardly-projecting lugs 0 o of the remov- 7o able caps O O', such arrangement limiting the upward movement of the valves, their downward movement being limited by the centrally-hanged portion engaging a shoulder in the passage.
rihe operation is as follows: The forward stroke of the piston in cylinder B will cause a vacuum to be formed in the passage or chamber C, forcing water through the inlet D into the chamber d, opening the valve H, andinto 8o the passage or chamber C leading into the cylinder. The reverse stroke of the piston will close the valve II, open the valve L, and force the water in chamber C into chamber K and into the discharge, at the same time forming 8 5 a vacuum in the chamber C', having communication with the opposite end of the cylinder, and forcing water through the inlet into chamber d', opening valve II, and into chamber C. The next forward stroke of the piston will close the valve H', open valve L and force the water in chamber C into chamber K and into the discharge, at the same time operating the opposite set of valves, as iirst described, this operation being repeated with 95 each forward and backward stroke of the pist0n. A
Having described the invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
The herein-described valve lnechanism for double-acting pumps, consisting of the box or IOO case formed in t-Wo sections, one of said sections having the inletfthe inlet-chambers, the Water-passages C C', located onopposite sides and communicating, respectively, With opposite ends of the pump-cylinder, the passages connecting the inlet-chamber and the charnbers C C', and the puppet-valves located one in each said passages, the other or opposite section having the outlet, the outlet-chambers, the removable plugs for said chambers, the thimbles extending int-o the passages C C of the other section. and uniting the two, the c passages through said thi mbles into the outletchainbers, and the puppet-valves, one in each said passages, the two sections being removably secured together, substantiallyl as described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
LEOPOLD DAHLSTROlVI.
