H. M. DARLING. OUTTING TOOL.
No. 436,306. Patented Sept. 9; 1890.
qwi bmeooeo awvaw'foz r 23% A afl oz vm I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M. DARLING, OF SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ADELBERT S. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
CUTTING-TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,306, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed January 28, 1889. Serial No. 297,888. (No model.)
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. DARLING, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Tools, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved cutting-tool'adapted to be used in asuit-able cutting-machine, and has for its object the production of a simple and effective tool which shall, as desired, make a single cut or a double cut; and to this end it consists, essentially, in a support adapted to be engaged or connected to a suitable cutting-machine, bits, or knives adj ustably mounted upon said support with the adjacent surfaces of their cutting-edges normally contacting for the purpose of making a single cut and adapted to be adjusted upon the support for the purpose of making a double cut or forming a tenon or tongue.
It furthermore consists in the detail construction and arrangement of the parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In describing my invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the front side of my improved cutting-tool with the bits or knives in their normal position, forming a single cutter. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the back side of my improved cutter, the bits or knives being shown as adjusted for the purpose of forming a tenon 0r tongue. a longitudinal section taken on line 00 00, Fig. 1, illustrating the means for retaining the bits or knives in their desired position upon the support. Fig. tis an edge view of a modified form of my cutting-tool, and Fig. 5 is a plan View similar to Fig. 2 with the knife-securingcap removed.
A represents the stock or support, having a shank A or other suitable means for attachment to any desired cutting-machine.
B represents the bits or knives, the upper Fig. 3 is ends of which are mountedupon the face A of the stock or support A, and preferably abut against the shoulder A thereof. The lower ends of the bits or knives B are formed with any suitable cutting-edge adapted for the par: ticular work for which the tool is designed.
Mounted on the back of the bits or knives B is the cap 0, which is preferably formed of a separate piece from the stock or support A. The bits or knives interposed between the face A of the support and the face 0 of the cap 0 are securely held or clamped in their desired position by means of the screw or bolt D, which passes through cut-outs D in the adjacent edges of said knives, and has one extremity (preferably the head) bearing upon the front side of the support or countersunk therein. The nut 61 is secured upon the opposite end of said screw or bolt D and bears upon the back side of the cap 0, tightly clamping the faces A and 0' against the interposed bits or knives, securely retaining the same from displacement. The edge of the front side of the stock or support A is preferably beveled toward the knife B, and is pro vided with a center line for the purpose of centering the knives. The head of the bolt D, while preferably countersunk into the front side of the support A for the purpose of adding to the appearance of the tool, may, if desired, bear against the front side of said sup port without being countersunk therein; but such is not the preferable construction.
By unscrewing the nut 01 the bits or knives B may be readily moved or adjusted away from each other, asin Fig. 2, for the purpose of forming a tenon or tongue of any desired size, and when in the desired adjustment by screwing down the nut the bits will be securely clamped in this position by means of the cap 0. To guide this movement I provide the key or rib b, which is preferably secured thereto, and takes in a key or guideway a, provided in the face A of the support A, thus preventing tilting of the bits and keeping their cuttingedges in alignment when adjusting the same to vary the cut. This construction of cutting-tool fills along-felt want for a tool, which,
while it can be used for forming a tenon or tongue of any desirable Width, can also be converted into a single cutter adapted to be used for making a single cut for any of the usual purposes.
In Fig. t I have shown a modified form of the means for guiding the bits or knives in their adjustment. The preferable construction is, as in Fig. 3, by means of abutting the upper edge of the bit with a shoulder A of the support and securing a key or rib b to the bit and guiding the same in the guideway or groove a. In Fig. 4c I have shown two of these keys or ribs, in which case it is not usuually advisable to abut the top edge of the bit 01' knife with the shoulder A and, if desired, this shoulder may be dispensed with.
The operation of my improved cutting-tool will be readily understood from the foregoing, and it is evident that the detail construc-' tion and arrangement of its parts may be somewhat varied from that described. Hence I do not limit myself to the exact form and construction.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by 25 Letters Patent, is-
The herein described tenoning tool, the same consisting of a stock having an attaching-shank at one extremity and a bearing-face at the opposite extremity, a shoulder between 30 said shank and bearing-face, a pair of bits" movably mounted on said bearing-face, a cap engaging the shoulder on the stock and mounted on the outside of said bits for securing them to the stock, a bolt passing through 3 5 said stock and cap, and cut-outs in the adjacent edges of said knives for receiving said bolt, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof lhavehereuntosigned 0 my name, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca, in the State of New York, this twentyfifth (25th) day of January, 1889.
