(No Model.)
L. 0. BARRETT. GARPENTERS GAGE.
Np. 436,166. Patentd Sept. 9. 1890.
I I IIOI I UNITED STATES LUCIUS 0. BARRETT,
PATENT ()FFICE.
OF BRATTLEBOROUGH, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO J. A.
TITUS dz 00., OF SAME PLACE.
CARPENTERS GAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,166, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed January 8, 1890.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIUS O. BARRETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brattleborough, in the county of Windham and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Gages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in combined square and bevel gages, which will be hereinafter more particularly described and pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention as applied. Fig.2 is atop view of the device; Fig. 3, a reverse view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top View of the scale or blade. Fig. 5 is an end View of the sliding head.
A is the stock for the gage.
B is the scale or blade.
0 is a set-screw for securing the scale B on the stock A.
D is a sliding head, shown in plan in Figs. 2 and 3 and in perspective in Fig 1.
E is a set-screw to secure the head D to the blade B.
F and Gare set-screws for securing the pencil H and the steel point I. The stock A is so constructed that it is easily managed with the hand, similarly to the handle of a plane, as represented in Fig. 1, where R represents a table or any plane surface, and S is the paper or surface on which lines are to be drawn.
The sliding head D has attached to it two Serial No. 336,220. (No model.)
short cylinders d d, with holes in them for a pencil H and a steel point I, both of which blade B, to indicate the divisions thereon.
The head D also has grooves dd on thelower side, in which the blade B slides, and the setscrew E is to fasten the head at any point.
In the stock A there is a set-screw O for fastening the stock tot-he blade B, which is made to fit and slide in the grooves a ain the stock.
The stock A can be used for two distinct functions, according to which edge of it may be placed on the edge of the table or other plane. The edge A is square with the line of the grooves a, a, and consequently the blade B is also square with the same. The edge A is at atrue miter or an angle of fortyfive degrees, and when it shall be used the blade will be at the same angle for scribinga true miter-line.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is The adjustable head D, having on the under side a groove d, and holes in the cylinders d d" for a pencil and steel point, in combination with the blade B, graduated on one side, and the stock A, having one edge square and the other beveled to the line of the blade, sub
stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUCIUS O BARRETT. Witnesses:
